I was a sick child. From as far back as I can remember I suffered from chronic allergies, asthma, bronchitis, and pneumonia. I was allergic to everything, perfume, cats, dogs, fresh cut grass, the list goes on. I would also have asthmatic reactions to all of the above in addition to running and even highly chlorinated pools. The local hospital was also a frequent hangout for me as at least twice a year, usually around a holiday, I would check in and spend a little time in the oxygen tent. Having a “normal,” active childhood wasn’t possible for me and being this unwell made being a kid quite difficult. As a teenager I nearly flunked one year due to missing so many days from school. But that is where the story changed.
At fifteen, my mom got injured in her retail job. She slipped, fell backwards, and landed contorted on her back. She was in so much pain she could not fully bear weight on her legs. The pain radiated shocks down to her toes causing her body to buckle. She was hospitalized and diagnosed with herniated discs in her lumbar spine. Released with narcotic pain medications and a walker, she was instructed to rest and return to work when she could. Seemed reasonable, except that my mom had to work-as soon as possible! It was just her and I. My father passed away when I was six so she had to provide for us yet working was impossible at this point. Finally, after an entire month of not working, barley functioning and much convincing from her sister, my mom agreed to see my aunt’s chiropractor.
I don’t recall the exact time frame as to how long it took for my mom to regain full function and return to work and life, but it wasn’t long. I remember she went into the chiropractic office with a walker on her first visit and left walking out on her own! Just as with anything, healing takes time. It was quite a few months of regular trips to the chiropractor for my mom and there were even a few times he made a house call. But she healed and is pain free to this day.
I was with my mom for many of her treatments and so as any passionate chiropractor would do, our doctor started sharing the benefits of chiropractic care and children. My mom opened up about how sick I had always been and how much school I’d missed through the years because of it. Not long after her treatments began my mom brought me in as a new patient. Oh what a glorious day! As a single mom working a retail job, money wasn’t something there was a lot of but, my mom’s dedication to caring for her only child was as big as her heart. And so began my journey and delight of chiropractic for myself!
