Today on International Women’s Day, we’re proud to recognize the incredible leadership and vision of Faith Peterson, the founder and president of Beacon Center. 💜

A pioneer in the substance use disorder treatment field since 1983, Faith began her career as a prevention educator and counselor before rising into leadership roles across the field. Driven by the belief that every person deserves treatment designed for their unique needs, she founded Beacon Center in 1990 with a mission rooted in compassion, dignity, and recovery.

What started as one location in suburban Buffalo has grown into nine outpatient treatment facilities across New York State, along with the Albert O. Nichols House, a supportive community reintegration home that opened in 2006.

For more than three decades, Faith’s vision, innovation, and dedication have helped thousands of individuals and families find hope and healing. Her leadership continues to shape Beacon Center’s mission of providing accessible, person-centered care for those impacted by substance use and related challenges.

Today we celebrate Faith and the countless women who lead, advocate, and support recovery in our communities every day.

💜 Happy International Women’s Day.

⏰ Reminder: Daylight Saving Time begins this weekend.

Don’t forget to set your clocks forward one hour before bed on Saturday night. While we lose an hour of sleep, we gain longer evenings and more daylight. ☀️

A small shift in sleep can impact how we feel, so try to give yourself a little extra rest, stay hydrated, and ease into the new schedule.
Here’s to brighter days ahead. 🌷

Daylight Saving Time is almost here ⏰ and even a one-hour change can affect sleep, mood, and daily routines.

A few small adjustments ahead of time can help your body and mind ease into the change. Try shifting your bedtime a little earlier, getting some natural sunlight in the morning, and limiting caffeine later in the day.

Taking care of your sleep is an important part of taking care of your mental health.

What’s one thing you do to adjust when the clocks change? Let us know in the comments.

🎈🖤 Black Balloon Day – March 5th 🖤🎈

Beacon Center is proud to share that our Peer Advocate, Robert Green, will be attending this year’s Black Balloon Day at the Rome Life Center from 10:00am–12:00pm.

Black Balloon Day is a time to remember the lives lost to Substance Use Disorder, honor the families impacted, and stand together as a community of hope and recovery. The event will include brunch, a beautiful balloon display in memory of loved ones, and resources such as NARCAN training.

We are grateful to stand alongside our partners and community members to advocate for compassion, awareness, and meaningful change.

💜 Join us as we remember, reflect, and renew our commitment to recovery.

Today we recognize Self Injury Awareness Day. 🧡

A day to bring light to struggles that are often carried in silence. A day to replace judgment with compassion. A day to remind anyone who is hurting that they are not alone.
If you or someone you love is struggling, support is available. Healing is possible. Your story is not over.

Let’s continue to create spaces where conversations are safe, stigma is reduced, and hope is stronger than shame.

For Black History Month, we honor leaders who are changing the conversation around mental health and breaking down stigma in powerful, community-centered ways. 💜

Today, we’re highlighting Lorenzo P. Lewis, founder of The Confess Project.

Lorenzo created The Confess Project with a simple but transformative idea: meet people where they already feel safe. By training barbers to become mental health advocates, The Confess Project uses barbershops as trusted spaces to normalize conversations about depression, trauma, stress, and emotional wellness, especially among Black men.

For generations, barbershops have been more than places for haircuts. They’ve been community hubs. Spaces for honesty, storytelling, and connection. Lorenzo recognized that these spaces hold real power and turned them into gateways for healing.

Through education, advocacy, and community partnerships, The Confess Project has helped reduce stigma and increase mental health awareness in communities that have historically faced barriers to care. His work reminds us that support does not always begin in a clinical office. Sometimes it begins in conversation. In trust. In community.

At Beacon Center, we believe recovery and wellness are strengthened through connection. We know that when stigma is reduced and safe spaces are created, healing becomes possible.

Let’s continue the conversation. Let’s continue to show up for one another. 💜

❄️ Last week, our Peer Advocate Robert Green represented Beacon Center as we tabled at the Center for Family Life and Recovery Winter Bash!

Events like this are a powerful reminder that recovery is built through connection, community, and showing up for one another. We’re grateful for the opportunity to share resources, meet new faces, and stand alongside other organizations committed to hope and healing.

Thank you to Center for Family Life and Recovery for bringing everyone together. 💜

On February 3rd, members of the Beacon Center team proudly traveled to Albany for Stand Up for Recovery Day (SURD) hosted by Friends of Recovery – New York. Alongside our friends at Center for Family Life and Recovery, we joined advocates from across New York State to raise our voices at the Capitol.

Our Peer Advocate, Robert Green, and his group met with Marianne Buttenschon, who represents the 119th Assembly District in the New York State Assembly and serves on committees impacting health, mental health, and community services.

Beacon Counselor Barbara and her group met with representatives from the office of Brian Miller, who represents the 101st Assembly District and advocates on issues affecting rural communities, public health, and local services.

In total, five Beacon Center team members were present throughout the day, standing together for access, equity, and continued investment in recovery services.

Stand Up for Recovery Day brings people in recovery, families, and allies together to share their stories, reduce stigma, and shape policy that supports healing communities. It is a powerful reminder that recovery is possible, recovery is happening, and recovery matters.

We are proud to advocate for the individuals and families we serve and grateful to be part of a statewide movement that keeps hope at the center. 💜

For Black History Month, we honor leaders whose work continues to shape the way we understand mental health and recovery.

Today we recognize Dr. Maxie Clarence Maultsby Jr., a pioneering psychiatrist and founder of Rational Behavior Therapy. His work helped lay the foundation for many of the cognitive and behavioral strategies used in addiction treatment today.

Dr. Maultsby believed that while we can’t always control what happens to us, we can learn to manage how we respond. He focused on emotional self regulation, challenging harmful thought patterns, and giving people practical tools to change their behaviors.
In recovery, that mindset matters.

At Beacon Center, we see every day how powerful it is when someone learns they are not controlled by their thoughts or circumstances. With the right support and tools, change is possible.

This month, we honor the legacy of those who helped make recovery stronger and more accessible for all. 💛

About Us

Beacon Center has established itself as a premier provider of outpatient alcoholism and substance-abuse treatment services since 1990 for both persons with substance use disorder and the significant others in their lives. We also operate a supportive living home, the Albert O. Nichols House, which is for men who have achieved significant periods of sobriety and are serious about furthering their recoveries. We are fully certified by New York State, and all of our services are strictly confidential. One of Western New York’s largest woman-owned businesses, Beacon Center’s philosophy is that substance use disorder is highly treatable and that all patients should be accorded dignity and respect with the goal of restoring their lives. For more information about our services, or to make an appointment for an evaluation, please call us at the number provided below.
