Happy holidays PAWNY! As this year comes to an end, we wanted to highlight some of UB SPAWNY's events this semester:

1. Amherst Wellness Fair: UB SPAWNY members participated in the Amherst Wellness Fair on July 26th and had the opportunity to provide blood pressure screenings and offer medication disposal resources to senior citizens. They were also able to share information about the Vial of Life Program, which is a program designed to help first responders quickly access important medical information in emergency situations.
2. DEA Drug Takeback Day: UB SPAWNY members participated in Drug Takebacks at two sites, DeGraff Memorial Hospital and Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, on October 25th. They were able to assist over 50 community members with disposing of unwanted or expired medications, as well as provide drug disposal kits, information regarding year-round drug disposal sites, and mental health resources. It was meaningful being able to connect with local community members, pharmacists, and DEA Drug Takeback agents.
3. PLAID Day: On November 18th, SPAWNY had their annual Pharmacy Legislative Advocacy Invitational Day, where senators and assemblymembers discussed PAWNY priorities, including the PAPA bill, Waived Tests/CLIA Testing Expansion, and treating simple infections after testing. In addition to learning more about these talking points, students gained valuable insight regarding advocacy. For instance, they learned about the importance of using stories and personal experiences to guide advocacy-related conversations so that legislators without pharmacy backgrounds can better understand the impacts of the bills being proposed.
4. PAWNY Board Meetings: Throughout this semester, SPAWNY members have attended monthly PAWNY board meetings to learn more about the work that PSSNY/PAWNY is doing, share student initiatives, and hear legislative updates. These meetings have been amazing opportunities for students to connect with pharmacists and learn more about how they can contribute to the profession.

We cannot wait for what 2026 will bring!

Legislators must pass the Patient Access to Pharmacy Act, so independent pharmacies can operate in small New York communities.
