Honoring Black History Month

At South Bay Counseling, we recognize the importance of celebrating Black history and its profound impact on mental health and wellness. Throughout history, Black communities have faced unique challenges, and the resilience of those who have contributed to mental health practices is a testament to their strength.

đź’ˇ Black History Fact: Did you know that Dr. Frances Cress Welsing, a pioneering African American psychiatrist, made significant contributions to the understanding of the psychological effects of racism? Her work continues to influence how mental health professionals approach issues of race and identity in therapy. Her legacy reminds us of the importance of culturally sensitive care in creating healing spaces for all.

This month and every month, let’s commit to learning, growing, and fostering inclusivity in mental health.

Parenting and Neurodiversity: Did You Notice Signs of Autism or ADHD in Your Children?

As parents, we’re often the first to notice when something feels a little different with our kids. If you’ve been diagnosed with autism or ADHD later in life, did you start to notice similar signs in your children? 🤔

What were the first signs you noticed? Did certain behaviors or patterns seem familiar to you?

How did your own diagnosis influence how you approach parenting? Has it helped you better understand your child’s needs, or has it opened up new challenges?

Parenting can be tricky, and recognizing these signs early on can make a huge difference in supporting your child. I'd love to hear your experiences and any advice you might have for others who are navigating this!

Discovering Autism or ADHD Later in Life: How Has Your Diagnosis Impacted You?

For many adults, receiving a diagnosis of autism or ADHD later in life can be both a relief and a challenge. It can help explain long-standing struggles with social interactions, work, and organization, but it can also raise new questions about how to manage these aspects of life moving forward.

How did you find out? Was it a moment of clarity, or did you struggle for years to find the right answers?

What’s changed since your diagnosis? Does understanding your neurodiversity make it easier to navigate day-to-day tasks? Or has it been an adjustment to accept and adapt to your new understanding of yourself?

Has your diagnosis helped or hurt your ability to connect with others? How about your organizational skills, do you feel more empowered, or are you still navigating challenges?

Your story could resonate with so many others on a similar journey. Share your experiences in the comments below or DM me if you'd prefer to chat privately. You’re not alone in this! 🙌

Hi! Meet Shiran Glass, LMSW

Asking for help can sometimes be daunting. No matter the situation, reaching out to a
mental health practitioner can help you get clarity about your life. Sometimes genetics
determines whether you suffer from anxiety, depression, or stress; sometimes it’s life
circumstance; and yet other times it’s childhood experience.

Regardless of the cause, therapy can provide guidance and support on your path to well-being.
You deserve to live a life of meaning that is balanced. Suffering can occur whether you
have a diagnosis or not; whether you are smart and successful, or whether you have
financial stability. Through a compassionate lens, I can work with you to ease struggles
and stress and increase happiness and well-being. It is not what you have, but how you
learn to live with it.

I have traveled near and far searching for the fix- to always be at the
top of my game, setting unrealistic standards that left me disappointed. I discovered that
learning to cope with any situation or emotion can build strength and resilience.
Together we can create goals to get you where you want to be.
I love using all of my life experiences, degrees, and trainings to best assist you in living
your best life. To name a few: CBT, DBT, mindfulness, emotional resiliency, and
spirituality.

My formal training includes a Master of Social Work degree from Fordham University and
licensure as an LMSW in New York. I draw on a variety of backgrounds and trainings to help
meet your goals; Mindfulness and emotional regulation from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
(DBT) as well as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I enjoy working with individuals,
adolescents, couples, and parents.

Is Fertility Access at Risk? How Recent Changes in Reproductive Rights Could Impact Us All

With recent changes to reproductive rights in states like Texas and Florida, how are people feeling about their fertility options in places like New York? Do you feel confident and safe with the options available, or are there concerns about access to fertility care being impacted nationwide, like we’ve seen with abortion rights?
