Did you know we carry a great vitamin supplement that helps your eyes in our office? Eye supplements are designed to add to, not replace, nutrients you get from a healthful diet. Taking a daily multivitamin and mineral supplement can help fill in the nutritional gaps in a less-than-optimal diet and may help protect you from degenerative diseases, including eye diseases such as macular degeneration and cataracts.

If you're considering supplementing your diet with a daily eye supplement, choose one that contains many, if not all, of the following ingredients:
Vitamin A and beta-carotene
Vitamin B complex
Vitamin C
Vitamin D
Vitamin E
Lutein and zeaxanthin
Phytochemical antioxidants
Omega-3 essential fatty acids
Bioflavonoids

If you want to take the guesswork out of trying to find all of these ingredients, stop by and check out the ones we carry!

How important are sunglasses?

Extended exposure to the sun's UV rays has been linked to eye damage, including cataracts, macular degeneration, pingueculae, pterygia and photokeratitis that can cause temporary vision loss.

Anyone who spends time outdoors is at risk for eye problems from UV radiation.

To protect your eyes from harmful solar radiation, sunglasses should block 100 percent of UV rays and also absorb most HEV rays.

Swing in today to discuss options for best protecting your eyes!

Progressive lenses are a great alternative to traditional lined bifocals or trifocals. They give you a more youthful appearance by eliminating the visible lines found in bifocal (and trifocal) lenses.

Beyond being just a multifocal lens with no visible lines, progressive lenses offer other advantages as well: primarily, the ability to see at all distances, including at arm's length for computer use and up close for reading.

Bifocal lenses have only two powers: one for seeing across the room and the other for seeing up close. Objects in between, like a computer screen or items on a grocery store shelf, often remain indistinct with bifocals.

To attempt to see objects at this "intermediate" range clearly, bifocal wearers must bob their heads up and down, alternately looking through the top and then the bottom of their bifocals, to determine which part of the lens works better.

Instead of providing just two lens powers like bifocals (or three, like trifocals), progressive lenses are true "multifocal" lenses that provide a smooth, seamless progression of many lens powers for clear vision across the room, up close and at all distances in between.

With progressive lenses, there's no need to bob your head up and down or adopt uncomfortable postures to see your computer screen or other objects at arm's length.

We have great options for progressive lenses if this sounds like something that would help you see what you want to see better! Call or stop in today!

Daily disposable contact lenses are single-use lenses that are removed and discarded at the end of each day, and a fresh pair of lenses is applied to the eyes the next morning.
The more frequently you replace your lenses, the healthier and more comfortable your eyes can be.

Protein, calcium, lipids and other substances found naturally in your tears can build up on your lenses. These deposits make your contacts less comfortable than when they were new, and can also make your eyes more prone to infection.

Of course, lenses can be cleaned, but cleaning is not 100 percent effective. Some deposits will remain and continue to accumulate over time.

Then contact lens manufacturers have developed new manufacturing methods to produce high-quality lenses in greater volume, at lower cost. These advances led to lower lens prices, making it affordable to replace lenses more often. Daily disposable lenses are often more affordable than many people expect. The manufactures often give us amazing rebates to help you save!

We are always more than happy to give you trials of daily lenses to try when you come in for your yearly, exam, just let us know you are interested!

How many pairs of eyeglasses do you need? That depends on your vision needs, your vision insurance, your budget – and even your fashion sense.

Most people get prescription eyeglasses to correct their vision, but other specialty eyewear includes computer glasses to reduce digital eye strain, prescription sunglasses to block harmful ultraviolet rays, readers to help you see up close, and ski goggles and sports glasses for when you’re on the slopes or riding your motorcycle.

We can help you with all of these options! Stop in today to browse through our selection or discuss options that might benefit your lifestyle!

You check in to say good night to your son only to find he is playing "Fortnite" in bed.Or your daughter is busy texting when she is supposed to be studying. Children and their phones are inseparable today, and all that reading and playing games on their handheld devices may be harming their vision.

Is "too much" screen time bad for your kids' eyes? Staring at the screens of digital devices adds to the amount of blue light exposure kids get over the course of their lifetime. But it's important to point out that the sun emits far more harmful blue light than computers, e-tablets and smartphones. So the blue light exposure from digital devices is an added exposure, over and above the larger amount of blue light exposure a person gets from sunlight.

It will probably take several decades before the long-term effects of extensive screen time for kids are better understood. But there is already some related research that suggests it may be wise to limit blue light exposure starting at an early age.

It's unlikely kids will reduce their use of digital devices. So the answer lies in taking steps to limit the amount of blue light reaching their eyes while they are using these devices.

One solution is to purchase eyeglasses with lenses that reduce the amount of blue light that enters the eyes from computer, e-tablet and smartphone screens. A number of lens manufacturers produce eyeglass lenses that filter blue light.

Another option is to have an anti-reflective coating that blocks blue light applied to the lenses.

A third option is to purchase glasses with photochromic lenses. These sun-sensitive lenses block some blue light indoors and have the added advantage of automatically blocking additional blue light from the sun outdoors without the need for a separate pair of prescription sunglasses.

We offer all of these products in our office, and are happy to go over which options would best protect your kids' eyes!

Has your child had a recent eye exam? Even if they are not complaining about not being able to see well, a routine eye exam is a good idea.

According to a study funded by the National Institutes of Health, approximately 35 percent of American preschoolers have nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness or astigmatism.

For school-aged children, the AOA recommends an eye exam every two years if no vision correction is required. Children who need eyeglasses or contact lenses should be examined annually or as recommended by their eye doctor.

It's thinking about being spring sometime soon. Are you ready? Do you have adequate protection for your eyes?

Did you know: Extended exposure to the sun's UV rays has been linked to eye damage, including cataracts, macular degeneration, pingueculae, pterygia and photokeratitis that can cause temporary vision loss?

And new research suggests the sun's high-energy visible (HEV) radiation (also called "blue light") may increase your long-term risk of macular degeneration. People with low blood plasma levels of vitamin C and other antioxidants especially appear at risk of retinal damage from HEV radiation.

To protect your eyes from harmful solar radiation, sunglasses should block 100 percent of UV rays and also absorb most HEV rays.

Stop by during normal business hours to check out our expanded section of sunglasses and find the right protection for you!

Have you ever wondered why we suggest getting an Anti-glare on your lenses? It might seem like an unnecessary additional cost, but consider this:

An anti-reflective coating makes all eyeglass lenses better. AR coatings eliminate reflections in lenses that reduce contrast and clarity, especially at night. They also make your lenses nearly invisible, so you can make better eye contact and you and others aren't distracted by reflections in your lenses. AR-coated lenses are also much less likely to have glare spots in photographs. Our anti-glare products also come with a built-in scratch warranty. If your lenses get scratched any time during the 18 months after you purchase them, you can have them re-made twice at no cost to you!
