🧬 Breakthrough in Hearing Loss Treatment! 👂✨

A new gene therapy has helped 10 people between ages 1 and 24 who were born with hearing loss caused by a problem in a gene called OTOF. After getting just one injection in the ear, all of them began to hear much better—one 7-year-old girl even heard rain for the first time and can now talk with her mom. Scientists say this is just the beginning, and they hope to use gene therapy to help people with other types of genetic hearing loss in the future.

The gene therapy regimen seems to be working wonders, including restoring nearly all hearing to a seven-year-old patient after just four months.

🐟 🎧 Can tiny zebrafish help solve human hearing loss?
Creighton University researchers think so! They're studying how zebrafish regenerate damaged ear cells—something humans can’t do (yet). These little fish share similar hearing structures with us, making them powerful tools for testing new treatments and drugs that could one day restore hearing in people. 👂💡

It’s a big leap for hearing health, starting with a very small fish. 🧬✨

It’s a study underway at Creighton University that’s made possible through a $1.3 million dollar grant from the NIH.

🔊 Important Safety Update for Families: Reece’s Law 🔊

At Anacortes Hearing Center, your family's safety is our top priority. We want to help spread awareness about Reece’s Law, a critical piece of legislation passed to protect children from the dangers of button batteries.

📌 What is Reece’s Law?
Named in memory of Reece Hamsmith, a toddler who tragically lost her life after swallowing a button battery, this law requires manufacturers to make button batteries more secure and packaging child-resistant. It also mandates clear warning labels to prevent these tragic accidents.

👂 Why does this matter in audiology?
Many hearing aids and amplification devices still use button batteries. If you or a family member uses these, especially around young children, please take extra care to:

✅ Store devices and batteries out of reach
✅ Properly dispose of used batteries
✅ Consider switching to rechargeable hearing aids if appropriate

We're here to help answer any questions and discuss safer hearing solutions. Let’s keep our little ones safe while ensuring better hearing for everyone.

💬 If you’d like to learn more about battery safety or alternative hearing options, call us at 360-588-1956 or send us a message!

Protect your hearing. Protect your health.

Today is the 30th Annual International Noise Awareness Day, a day dedicated to turning the volume down on noise. Noise-induced hearing loss cannot be reversed, but it can be prevented. Here are eight tips for protecting your hearing:

1. Wear hearing protection, such as SoundGear, when in loud environments.
2. Avoid loud places.
3. Monitor noise levels around you (the SoundCheck Live app is great for this: https://brnw.ch/21wSjYx).
4. Keep the volume of your devices under 60%.
5. If you are in a noisy environment, move away from the loudest sound source.
6. Take noise breaks.
7. If you were exposed to loud sounds, let your ears recover in quiet.
8. Get your hearing tested if you experience a sudden change in hearing such as ringing or a feeling of fullness in your ears for over 24 hours.
