It has already been two years since we held the farewell service for our beloved friend, Pastor D**g-seon Chae, who was our family's pastor and whom we miss so much.

newspaper in LA asked me to write a tribute to the late Pastor D**g Sun Chae, and the article I wrote as a tribute, , was published in the newspaper, so I am posting it here. .....................................................................

'There is no one else like him!'
In memory of (the late) Pastor D**g-sun Chae

Jay Oh (Pastor, President of Daybreak University)

My good friend whom I love so much, Pastor D**g-sun Chae, the founder and senior pastor of the “Church of the Poor in Heart (Mark Church)” who readily gave us the first location to start DayBreak University, has returned to the Kingdom of God. He is a person who has always warmly and humbly served the poor and marginalized throughout his life, as if they were the most precious people in the world. It was a great inspiration and example to me. When I came here in LA and was at my most difficult time, he was my best friend with whom I could confide in and share my inner feelings, a companion on the same path, my senior pastor, and DayBreak University (DBU which I founded and serve as President). He was the best supporter who always supported DBU. Pastor Chae's sermon was an amazing, living message that was so vivid, as if he had just met the resurrected Jesus who died on the cross on the other side of the street.

Thanks to this, while listening to his sermons, my wife and I were often filled with tears and wept bitterly. I really can't believe that I will never be able to hear Pastor Chae's amazing sermons, spirituality, and bright, boyish laughter ever again. I really want to question God. Why on earth did you take this wonderful person away so quickly and suddenly instead of keeping him with us a little longer?

Pastor Chae gives his all to the poor and those suffering in pain without asking or questioning them, and he regrets not being able to give more... He was that kind of person. A person who is really anxious for not being able to hug those people and share their pain more... In fact, I have never seen a person like that very much in my life. As I was holding the final farewell service to send off him, I vividly remembered him once smiling and saying, “What I want most is for only Jesus to be revealed through my life and ministry, and I don’t want anything else of me to be revealed.” It occurred to him, and I felt confident, 'It has come true just as he had hoped!'

As I was about to go down the mountain after the lowering ceremony, the last song someone had played came on, and the title of the song was “There is no one else like that.” As I listened to this song, I felt like it was singing about Pastor Chae. Among the many people I have met so far, I don't think there is no other person like him. His life is like the lyrics of this song, “Because I can give everything, because I can love… I feel like I’ve lived a life that says, “I’m really happy.”

“The Church of the Poor in Heart (Mark’s Church)” is not only for the poor in spirit, but also for those who have no money or for various reasons, are sick, suffering, poor, lonely, and powerless, regardless of whether they are believers or non-believers, and who have what they have.

There was one Pastor who gave everything and gave it again and again, but was sad that he could not give more. We are now mourning and mourning the loss of him who suddenly left us. Like Reverend Ahn Maeng-ho’s sermon at Pastor Chae Jeon’s farewell service to heaven, “we must now live the rest of our lives by practicing the spirit that he has shown through for the past 24 years. “I promise to do it.”

My very dear friend, my Pastor Chae! We run to our Lord with our arms wide open and embrace each other. Goodbye until we meet again!! I love you, Bro!!

너무너무 보고싶은 나의 사랑하는 친구, 우리 가족의 담임목회자님이시고 우리 데이브레이크대학교의 최고의 후원자이셨던 (고)채동선 전도사님 천국환송예배를 드린지가 벌써 2주년이 되었습니다.

LA에 있는 신문사에서, 고 채동선전도사님에 대한 추모의 글을 써줬으면 좋겠다고해서, 제가 추모사로 쓴 글 이 실렸기에 여기에 올립니다. ...................................................................................................

너무너무 사랑하는 내 좋은 친구, 우리 데이브레이크대학교가 시작할 수 있게 첫 장소를 선뜻 내주었던, “마음이 가난한 사람들의 교회 (마가교회)” 설립자이며 담임목회자인 채동선 전도사님이 하나님의 나라로 돌아갔습니다. 가난하고 소외된 사람들을, 마치 이 세상에서 가장 고귀한 분들을 대하듯, 늘 따뜻하고 겸손하게 일평생 섬겨온 분입니다. 부족한 저에게 큰 울림과 본보기가 되어주었지요.

저 개인적으로는 제가 이곳에 와서 가장 힘들고 어려웠을 때, 서로 속마음을 털어놓고 나눌 수 있던 최고의 친구였고, 같은 길을 가고 있는 동반자이며, 저의 담임목회자님이며, 제가 설립하여 총장으로 섬기고 있는 Daybreak University (DBU)를 위해 항상 응원해주던 최고의 후원자였습니다.

채전도사님의 설교는 마치, 십자가에 달려 죽으셨다가 부활하신 예수님을, 방금 전에 저쪽 길모퉁이에서 만나고 온 사람처럼, 너무나도 생생한 정말 살아있는, 놀라운 말씀을 전해주곤 했습니다. 덕분에 제 아내와 저는 그분의 설교를 들으며, 눈물범벅에 통곡을 한 적이 한두번이 아니었습니다. 우리 채전도사님의 그 놀라운 설교와 영성, 해맑은 소년 같이 순수한 그 웃음 소리를 이제 두 번 다시 들을 수가 없다니 정말 믿겨기지가 않습니다. 정말 하나님께 따져 묻고 싶습니다. 도대체 왜 이런 분을 우리 곁에 좀 더 두시지 않고 이렇게 빨리 갑작스럽게 데려가시는지 말입니다.

채전도사님은 가난한 사람들과, 고통가운데 아파하는 사람들에게, 묻지도 따지지도 않고, 그저 자신의 모든 것을 다 주고, 좀 더 주지 못해 안타까워하는… 그런 분이었습니다. 그런 분들을 부둥켜안고 그 고통을 좀 더 함께 나눠 주지 못해 정말 안달이 난 사람처럼... 사실 저는 그런 사람을 한 평생 별로 본적이 없습니다. 채전도사님을 떠나보내는 마지막 천국환송예배를 드리면서, 저는 그분이 언젠가 “내가 가장 원하는 건, 오직 예수님 만이 나의 삶과 목회를 통해 드러나는 것이며, 나의 그 어떤 것도 나타나지 않기 만을 바란다”고 웃으며 말하던 모습이 생생하게 떠올랐고, ‘자신이 소원하던 대로 이루어졌구나!’하는 확신이 들었습니다.

하관예배를 마치고 산을 내려가려는데, 마지막으로 누군가가 틀어 놓은 노래가 흘러나왔는데, 그 노래 제목이 바로, 이승철의 “그런 사람 또 없습니다”였습니다. 저는 이 노래를 들으며, 이 노래가 마치 채전도사님에 대해 노래를 하는 것만 같았습니다. 나중에 채전도사님 사모님께서 제게 채전도사님이 가장 좋아하던 노래라고 알려줬습니다. 지금까지 제가 만난 수많은 사람들 중에, 아마도 채전도사님 같은 사람은 두번다시 또 없을 것만 같습니다. 그 분의 삶은 마치, 이 노래의 가사처럼, “나는 모든 걸 줄 수 있어서, 사랑할 수 있어서… 참 행복합니다”라고 말하는 삶을 산 것 같습니다.

“마음이 가난한 사람들의 교회 (마가교회)”에는, 마음이 가난한 사람들뿐 아니라, 돈이 없거나 여러가지 이유로 인해, 아프고 힘들고 가난하고 외롭고 힘없는 사람들, 그런 사람들에게, 신자 비신자를 가리지 않고, 자신이 가진 모든 것을 다 내어주고 또 주고도 더 못주어서 안타까워하는 그런 목회자 한 분이 계셨습니다.

우리는 지금 갑자기 우리 곁을 떠나간 그분을 추모하며 안타까워하고 있습니다. 채전도사님의 천국환송예배에서 안맹호목사님의 설교처럼, “우리는 이제 그분이 지난 24년동안 를 통해 보여주셨던 그 정신을, 우리의 남은 삶을 통해 우리도 실천하며 살아가야겠다고 다짐합니다.”

너무너무 사랑하는 내 친구, 나의 담임목회자님, 채전도사님! 우리 주님 앞에서 두 팔을 활짝 벌리고 반갑게 달려가 서로 부둥켜안으며 다시 만날 그 때까지 안녕!! I love you, Bro!!

Today was finally our DayBreak University Year-End Night—a day I had been looking forward to with so much excitement that I woke up already smiling. I was thrilled from the moment I opened my eyes, knowing I would be meeting our beloved DBU family in person at last.

From San Francisco and LA, from Jeju, Busan, Daegu, Mokpo, and Sancheong…so many of you traveled such long distances—
all to be here, together, as one DBU family.

After seeing each other only on Zoom for so long,
to finally stand face-to-face and shout,
“Oh my goodness, look who it is!!”
and fall into each other’s arms in warm embraces—
I can’t tell you how happy that made me.

And now what am I supposed to do?
I’m already looking forward to next year!

Every heartfelt story you shared tonight is still echoing deep within my chest. Among them, there are two stories I feel compelled to share here…
