For those of you who don’t know, let me introduce you to my personal platform outreach initiative called Swab AK. It’s my partnering with DKMS tailored to Alaska specifically. You match with those on the bone marrow registry that are the same ethnicity as yourself. At times, matches are often distantly related to one another and have even down to the same hair and eye color.
Alaska Natives are vastly underrepresented on the bone marrow registry and make up less than 1% of the available registry. This means when diagnosed with a blood cancer, Indigenous people have a harder time finding a match than any other ethnicity. This is why it’s so important to have a diverse registry.
