Thanksgiving is often a time of celebration, but can also bring feelings of stress, grief, and loneliness.

As we attend family gatherings and prepare for festivities, remember to take time for yourself and set boundaries when needed.

If the holidays are difficult for you, remember it’s okay to start new traditions if old ones no longer serve you or cause feelings of stress and anxiety.

Remember, holidays look different for everyone. Be kind to yourself and prioritize your well-being!

Maintaining a routine can help create structure and reduce the stress of uncertainty.

Starting small by incorporating one or two new habits into your day can help prevent overwhelm while increasing the likelihood you will stick to your new routine! Start with increasing your water intake or going to bed a half hour earlier; once you master these small steps, add more to build healthy habits for life.

Today we celebrate the dedication of those who have served and are actively serving our country. While we honor their sacrifices, we also acknowledge the challenges that many of our veterans and active-duty military face off the battlefield.

Whether it is PTSD, depression, anxiety, or the challenges of facing constant unknowns, we see you and you are not alone.

If you or someone you know is facing any of these battles, we can support the journey to healing and achieving wellness.

The holidays are a time for celebration and merriment, but they can also bring anxiety, fear and stress. We can prepare in advance for holiday overwhelm with some simple planning. Here are a few tips to not let the season get you down!

1. Set boundaries around gatherings, like deciding how long you’ll stay or who’s on speed dial when you need a pep talk. Putting prior plans in place can help boost confidence when going to an event.
2. Say no. It’s ok to be selective about what events you attend. Take care of yourself, even if it means sitting out a family gathering.
3. Prioritize rest. With all the things that need to get “done,” having adequate rest and time to recover can mean the difference between a major meltdown or a positive party.

What other tips do you have for a healthy holiday season?

Trick or Treat! It’s us, your feelings. When we come knocking, know that sharing how you feel with a trusted person can make a positive difference. You can talk to a friend, family member, counselor or therapist, but no matter who you talk to, sharing your feelings should make you feel supported and safe. Here’s to not letting our feelings spook us!

Whether it’s journaling, poetry or stream of consciousness scribbling, getting our feelings down on paper can help provide clarity and insight into what we may be going through.

Try this exercise: Write a “love letter” to yourself! Write down the things you do well, what you admire about your personality, or the positive things others say about you. Keep it in a place where you can look it when you need a little extra self-love.

We all have different motivations for seeking out therapy. It may be for you, your family or a close relationship that needs extra support.

No matter the motive, finding a “why” for engaging in therapeutic work can increase the chances of follow-through and growth.

For World Mental Health Day, tell us what you would like to improve through therapy, and find your “why”.
