More about Bones for Life:

Ruthy Alon (1930-2020), originator of the "Bones for Life" program, was one of the original 13 students trained directly by Moshe Feldenkrais in his first training program in Tel Aviv in the late 1960s.

Alon became one of the first practitioners to teach the Feldenkrais Method internationally, helping to spread it around the world.

Ruthie Alon created the Bones for Life (BFL) program after she was diagnosed with osteoporosis. Her personal experience was a key motivation for developing the program.
One of her primary inspirations for BFL came from observing African women who carry heavy loads on their heads with grace and efficiency, noting that these women have a significantly lower rate of bone fractures compared to Western women, despite often having lower bone density.
BFL incorporates principles from the Feldenkrais Method, focusing on alignment, efficient movement, and somatic learning to stimulate bone strength and overall posture.
Alon taught BFL in 28 countries worldwide, spreading her innovative approach to bone health and movement.
Alon earned a Ph.D. in the United States and had connections with NASA, indicating her work's scientific grounding and broader applications as a unique and effective approach to bone health through movement.

How is BFL different from Feldenkrais?

In a Feldenkrais class a practitioner guides the class verbally through various kinds of movement explorations.
The practitioner does not demonstrate the movements.
The idea is for each person to explore movement options to discover and feel for themself ways to move that are more easy, efficient and powerful and ways that are less so … such that a person learns to move in the world from an inner-referenced, felt sense of ease and power (something we all did as babies and children), not from an idea of how you should move or from an effort to copy a form or someone else's idea of efficient movement.

The Bones for Life program, by contrast, consists of 90 elegant movement processes or exercises designed by Ruthy Alon.
Although these processes arise out of a Feldenkrais understanding of movement, Ruthie's idea with Bones for Life was to cut more quickly to the chase and teach people gentle movement processes that will improve bone strength, posture, balance and overall movement efficiency, and diminish or eliminate chronic movement-related pain.
In a Bones for Life class, the teacher will demonstrate these processes.
Teaching Bones for Life has its own training and certification process, different the one required to become a Feldenkrais practitioner.

Moshe Feldenkrais learned jujitsu as a 13-year-old fighting for his life during the time the British ruled Palestine, and would not allow the Jews to carry knives to defend themselves. Moshe says the British model for its colonial empire was to divide and conquer, so they fomented hostility between the Arabs and the Jews, Which has slowly burned into the tragedy. We are witnessing today.
Many Jews were killed in attacks, first, because they could not carry knives to defend themselves and later, because a little jujitsu was more dangerous than no jujitsu for many because instead of running, they would stay to fight and be killed because of their inadequate skills.
So Moshe, as a teenager, invented his own form of martial arts, a form was more intuitive and biologically based than jujitsu, and he tested it on the streets fighting for his life. He eventually wrote a book on his martial art form and it was distributed by Jews underground and used for training underground. (The British Empire would not have allowed its distribution.)
A number of years later, Moshe’s book was brought to the attention of Jigaro Kano, the man who founded the art of judo.
Kano befriended Moshe, and sent two or three of his best students to train Moshe In the hopes that Moshe — who had left Palestine to school in physics and engineering at the Sorbonne by this time — would help spread judo to Western Europe. Moshe drank in this opportunity to learn and further refined his own skills and martial arts form and understandings.
During World War II, Moshe taught Allied troops hand-to-hand and bayonet combat.
All these skills and understandings are integrated into the Feldenkrais method, which took violent roots and self-defense and transformed them into a paradigm shift for healing the body and the spirit, unlike anything I’ve ever encountered, and I’ve been exploring deeply in the healing world for 35 years. The Feldenkrais method, also has profound, implications for healing human relationships, and living in “flow”.
I learned about flow, making my living as a river guide for 20 years. A wild and violent rapid can be run with a lot of struggle and drama and violence to the body. And this is the only way many River guides know how to do it Or the same rapid can be run almost effortlessly, like a beautiful piece of dance or art, by those who can really listen to and feel the power of the current, and move with that current, so the current does the work.
My experience with the Feldenkrais method convinces me that we can become more and more skillful in moving that way in life, interacting with the violence in the world in a way that helps the whole boat, the collective, to turn violence into flow, to meet conflict in a way that doesn’t generate more violence. And this path feels joyful, fun and life-giving.
For this to happen, we have to understand the whole as an interrelated system, instead of than “us” and “them”, and the way to get what we want is not simply to get “them” to change and be different, not to dominate and win and leave behind a loser. A lot of people are working to understand this in so many beautiful ways.
I did a good deal of my Feldenkrais training with Jeff Haller, who learned from Moshe Feldenkrais and then came and used Moshe’s own method to help Moshe recover from a stroke towards the end of his life. Jeff now works with top pro athletes to help them become better athletes.
Jeff he is also a martial artist, and he told me Moshe “threw” him three times in the course of their relationship. Jeff said every time he landed he found himself “better organized,” which in the Feldenkrais world means more powerful and flexible in his body, then he had been before he was thrown.
