Alaska Breast Center

Alaska Breast Center Dr. Charles Portera is a board-certified general surgeon with more than 20 years of experience specializing in breast care.

Alaska Breast Center’s comprehensive breast care program is specifically designed to meet the needs of Alaskan residents who are concerned about breast health and breast problems. Alaska Breast Center is one of the few breast cancer centers in Alaska that is proficient in BREAST PRESERVATION SURGERY which strives to keep as much healthy breast tissue as possible and works with plastic surgeons to

achieve an optimal natural appearance of a healthy breast after surgery. Dr. Portera is fellowship-trained in surgical oncology and cancer biology — the highest level of medical training in the U.S. His fellowship training was at MD Anderson Cancer Institute in Houston, Texas — one of the most prestigious cancer institutes in the world. Dr. Portera brings this experience to Alaska after a busy surgical oncology practice in Tennessee. Dr. Charles Portera specializes in new surgical techniques that preserve the cosmetic appearance of the female breast, while removing the breast cancer. BREAST PRESERVATION SURGERY involves several steps:

The cancerous tissue is removed and a pathologist near the operating room confirms that all cancerous tissue has been removed. The surgical team — which can include Dr. Portera working with a board-certified plastic surgeon — then focuses on obtaining the best possible cosmetic outcome in breast appearance. This may include plastic surgery on both breasts to achieve the best possible cosmetic result. During and after treatment for breast cancer, Alaska Breast Center coordinates your ongoing care with any of your existing primary care physicians, e.g. family practice, OB/Gyn, mammography center, radiology, oncologist, etc..

Breast preservation surgery is designed to remove breast cancer tissue while leaving as much healthy breast tissue as possible. The breast preservation surgeon often works in tandem with a plastic surgeon during the surgery to provide the best possible surgical outcome related to the removal of cancerous tissue, while restoring the natural appearance of the breast. The goal is to minimize the impact of tumor removal and preserve the natural appearance of the breast where possible. The breast surgeon may involve a cosmetic surgeon for the use of breast implants to restore the original appearance along with any necessary skin grafts. Both Dr. Portera and Dr. Jayich are proficient in breast preservation surgery.

Alaska Breast Center is one of the few breast cancer centers in Alaska that is proficient in BREAST PRESERVATION SURGERY. Some studies show that patients who have breast preservation surgery for breast cancer (followed by radiation therapy) have similar long-term survival rates as women who have a full mastectomy where the entire breast is removed. Individualized care plans are fundamental to achieving excellent outcomes and the highest quality of life after treatment. The multidisciplinary team approach enables each patient to have different treatment options.

Alaska Breast Center provides minimally invasive and cosmetically optimal comprehensive breast surgical care. Breast-conserving surgery is a breast cancer treatment plan where only part of the breast is removed. The remainder of the breast is left intact. How much of the breast is removed will depend on the lump’s size and its location. It is sometimes called a lumpectomy or partial mastectomy depending on how much tissue is removed. To become a candidate for breast preservation surgery depends on the type and stage of breast cancer and other factors. Not all breast cancer patients can have this procedure. Our highly trained breast cancer specialists are dedicated to providing the care you need. it's important to understand all of your surgical and other treatment options. Choosing your breast surgeon may be one of the most important decisions you will make concerning your care. Many surgeons occasionally operate on breast cancer, typically handling only a few cases a year. Research shows that breast cancer patients who have surgeries performed by physicians who have done a high volume of breast cancer surgeries have a better prognosis than patients of lower volume surgeons. Specialized breast cancer surgeons have dedicated their professional careers to the disease and perform hundreds of breast cancer surgeries every year.

Diagnostic surgery is also known as a biopsy. A biopsy removes a sample of tissue from the body for examination. Curative surgery involves the removal of a cancerous tumor. It works well on localized cancers that haven’t spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body. Curative surgery is often followed by radiation therapy or chemotherapy to destroy any remaining cancerous cells.
