According to a new report from the CDC, outpatient visits for “flu-like” illness are at their highest in nearly 30 years, and nine children have died of flu this season. In addition, a recently reported pediatric death from last year brings the 2024-’25 season total to 289, which is higher than any season since the CDC started tracking in 2004.
The surge in flu-like illness comes just as the CDC announced an overhaul to the childhood vaccine schedule that includes removing universal recommendations for numerous vaccines including flu. Despite changes to federal recommendations, the AAP will continue to recommend the flu vaccine for all children starting at six months of age.
