"Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 states that:

'No otherwise qualified person with a disability in the United States...shall, solely by reason of...disability, be denied the benefits of, be excluded from participation in, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.'

What is the impact of the law on post-secondary education?

Colleges and universities receiving federal financial assistance must not discriminate in the recruitment, admission, or treatment, of students. Students with documented disabilities may request modifications, accommodations, or auxiliary aids which will enable them to participate in and benefit from all post-secondary educational programs and activities. Post-secondary institutions make such changes, when appropriate, to ensure that the academic program is accessible to the greatest extent possible by all students with disabilities."

The Alaska Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ACBVI) is pleased to formally announce and welcome Nate Kile as Executive Director. Many of you already know Nate through his ten-year tenure with ACBVI. For six of those years, Nate served in a senior management position as Program Director; prior to that, he provided direct services via his roles as Assistive Technology Specialist, Employment Specialist, and Youth [Services] Coordinator. He has also represented ACBVI publicly through media appearances, community presentations, and statewide collaboration efforts. Always with a smile and a kind word, Nate has been a leader and a driving force in the running of our organization and, as board and staff, we place trust in his continued stewardship.

ACBVI would also like to take a moment to thank CB Brady, outgoing Executive Director, for his two decades of service in his roles as ED; board member; president of the board; supporter; donor; and advocate. We wish him all the best as he pursues new adventures in life.
