At the front of each eye, there is a lens that light passes through. As we age, tiny protein particles may clump together on the lens of one or both eyes. As a result of protein accumulation, the lens becomes cloudy. The clouding on the lens is what we refer to as cataracts. If you’ve been diagnosed with cataracts and are considering surgery, visit our website or give us a call to learn more.

Until about the age of 40, your natural lens is able to accommodate or change its power to allow near vision, even when the distance vision is corrected. After this time, accommodative power begins to weaken. This loss of accommodation is called presbyopia and people often need bifocals or reading glasses to compensate. When the lens/cataract is removed during surgery, any residual accommodative power is lost, but the patient has the benefit of being able to choose the power or type of new lens implant to customize the result to their specific needs. About Us

Our Story

Ophthalmic Associates (O.A.) was founded in 1972 when Kenneth T. Richardson, M.D. left the chairmanship at University of Pittsburgh to return to Alaska. Nurse Karen Lowe and orthoptist Diane Armitage helped to set up our initial office at 6th & K St. Additional doctors were recruited, including Aharon Sternberg, Ed Crouch, Jan Nyboer, Scott Limstrom, and Bob Rigg. Our practice moved to 542 West Second Avenue in 1981.

Over the years, Ophthalmic Associates offered satellite clinics in Kodiak, Cordova, Wasilla, and Homer. Dr. Richardson continued an active clinical glaucoma practice while simultaneously teaching, producing one of the first electronic medical record systems, and consulting at Baylor University in Houston, Texas. Many fine doctors have worked with O.A. in subsequent years and have made significant contributions to our success.
