Exercise is Medicine on Campus at UAA

Exercise is Medicine on Campus at UAA Exercise is Medicine On-Campus is an initiative by the American College of Sports Medicine to promote health and fitness in the college community.

Staying active and healthy have been shown to remedy and prevent a number of ailments. EIM-OC is an initiative of the American College of Sports Medicine, and we are thrilled to bring it to UAA as a club. The mission of EIM-OC is to foster collaborative relationships and leadership on campus between exercise, health, and other disciplines that support the EIM-OC vision and goals. The vision of EIM-OC is to see all campus and community members across multiple disciplines discover, share, and adopt the principles of EIM-OC that will help change the culture of chronic disease prevention and management campus-wide.

This semester, our Kinesiology students are providing wellness breaks just for UAA students over Zoom! These wellness breaks are focused on mental health. These sessions are also a great way to stay connected to your peers and the UAA community through fun interactive activities hosted by a student in the Kinesiology program completing these practicum experiences for their coursework. I think we can all agree we need to show ourselves some love by taking a minute to breathe, de-stress, stay grounded, refocus, and meet some new folks and make new friends. Participate to support your peers and stay wellthy.

Join the wellness break today at 3pm using this Zoom link: https://alaska.zoom.us/j/81088266949?pwd=VTVkTW5KV0tsZithUVFaaElhZVlUZz09

Same Zoom link for all events! Schedule for the semester below.

Welcome To Tip Tuesday!

How long do you sit at your desk all day? Is it somewhere near 4 hours? Maybe it's closer to 7 hours? However long you sit at your desk it's important to take mini-breaks to get your body moving! This will help not only with productivity but with the health of your body.

When I zone into a project for hours on end I find it difficult to actually work on what I’m supposed to be doing. However, by taking a few breaks every once in a while it actually helps me give my mind a break and get excited about what I’m working on again! Try changing your focus during your breaks to a completely different task to give yourself a breather.

Standing up, stretching, or just walking around after sitting for long periods of times has a ton of benefits to us! Throughout the day by getting active we improve our circulation, burn calories, maintain a proper posture, reduce low back pain, lower our risk of developing chronic diseases, and so much more!

We aren’t designed to sit all day! So be sure to take a break once an hour for 5 - 10 minutes by walking to get a snack or glass of water, stretching to relieve some tension, or even taking the time to do a few deep breaths. Do whatever your heart desires, just be sure to get up off of your chair!

Stay Happy, Healthy, and Safe!

Exercise is Medicine® has assembled a variety of scientific articles and resources related to the effects of exercise (acute and chronic) on the body’s immune response. Although specific data related to COVID-19 and exercise has not yet been obtained, research examining the body’s response to exercise reveals a cascade of cellular mechanisms that help protect the body from viral illnesses. In addition, there is clear evidence that exercise reduces depressive symptoms in everyone, including number and severity, as well as the acute and chronic symptoms of anxiety. This could be a very important benefit of maintaining an active routine during this period of isolation and stress.

Exercise should be incorporated as part of a multifaceted approach to enhancing mental health and well-being. Although specific physical activity guidelines for mental health have not been established, following the current American College of Sports Medicine guidelines for enhancing physical fitness should provide ample opportunities for individuals to enhance mental well-being.

Research indicates that aerobic, resistance, and mind-body exercises are effective strategies for improving anxiety, mood disturbances, and cognitive function.
