I was 25 when my mom told me she thought I had ADHD. But I didn't think much of it because I could sit at an easel for four to five hours straight.

Then I learned what ADHD actually is. It’s not about focusing on what interests you. It’s about focusing on what doesn’t. The bills. The paperwork. The boring stuff.

If that pattern sounds familiar, take the quiz on our website.

I couldn't understand fractions on a chalkboard.

Then my senior year of high school, I went to work as a glazer. And the first week I spent using a tape measure all day, it all just clicked.

That's what I want people to understand about ADHD brains. We're visual. We're tactile. We learn by doing.

When we say a kid "can't focus" in class, what we're really saying is that the environment is not built for how that child's brain works. It's not a deficit. It's a mismatch.

There was an article recently. The headline was something like, "Studies show hunter-gatherers who had ADHD did a better job of gathering."

It's a great headline. It's also completely backwards.

Hunter-gatherers didn't HAVE ADHD. Hunter-gatherers ARE ADHD. That's where these traits come from. That's the factory setting. Your ancestors survived for 300,000 years because of this wiring, not in spite of it.

The word "symptoms" is part of the problem. Symptoms assume it's a disease. These aren't symptoms. They're behavioral traits.

There is nothing wrong with you. You have a brain built for a world that no longer exists, living in a world it was never designed for.

That's not a disorder. That's a mismatch.

"I need it before school. It's due today."

Parents know this moment too well. The forgotten project. The last-minute scramble. The stress that starts before coffee.

These patterns often signal something deeper - and understanding the root cause changes everything.

At Louisville ADHD, we help families move from chaos to calm with evaluation, coaching, and comprehensive support.

We can't execute until dopamine rises. Fear creates dopamine. Deadlines create fear.

Resolutions have no built-in deadline. That's why they fail us.

The solution: create artificial deadlines, build accountability, and make consequences real. Your brain needs urgency to ignite - so build it yourself.

Is ADHD a superpower?

After 20+ years and thousands of patients, here's my answer:

Yes. But not in the way social media tells you.

I'm not talking about vague "you're special" affirmations. I'm talking about real advantages that kept our ancestors alive for 288,000 years.

Hyperfocus that lets us lock onto a target for hours. Crisis performance that makes us calm when everyone else panics. Intuition that notices what others miss. Risk tolerance that makes us entrepreneurs, first responders, athletes.

The catch? These superpowers don't activate sitting at a desk under fluorescent lights.

Put a tiger in a cubicle and it looks like a mess. Put it in the jungle and it's an apex predator.

We're the tiger. The cubicle is the problem.

I wrote about the real science behind why ADHD can be an advantage, when it shows up, and how to unlock it.

🧡 It's ADHD Awareness Month, and we're done with the stigma.

💜 ADHD: This wiring is not wrong-it was created by a natural path.

If you've ever felt like you were "born to run, not sit at your desk," there's a reason for that. And it has nothing to do with laziness, lack of discipline, or moral failing.

Here's the truth: For 288,000 years, humans were hunters and gatherers. We needed heightened senses, quick reactions, and the ability to hyperfocus when tracking prey. We thrived on movement, novelty, and high-stakes situations.

Then, just 12,000 years ago, we became farmers. And one hundred twenty years ago, industrialization dramatically changed how we live, and to quench the thirst for more factory workers, new laws were also demanded, making school mandatory.

Evolution takes thousands of years. As such, many of our brains remain hardwired for a world that no longer exists. Our brains are still hardwired for hunting and gathering. We crave movement, exploration, discovery, and creativity.

We procrastinate because our society is stagnant. We motivate through fear because that's what raises our dopamine levels.

Everything about ADHD is just as nature intended-but a sedentary world is not friendly to ADHD brains.

The good news? There ARE solutions. You are not alone. And you are NOT broken.

It's time to stop trying to "fix" ourselves and start understanding how many of our brains work. Restlessness and the need for movement are not defects. It's a mismatch. When we work to harness this wiring instead of against it, the potential is unlimited. ✨Many of our brains are not wired to sit at a desk all day. Most of us are still wired to chase, explore, and respond to the environment. There ARE solutions to harness this wiring.

This ADHD Awareness Month, let's spread a different message-one of understanding, not shame.

You're not alone. You're not broken. We are just living in the wrong era. 💚
