I’m excited to be speaking at Annual Summit for the AK Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics May 6th! 🤓💩

➡️ Breaking the Cycle of Constipation: why hydration & fiber aren’t always enough.

Join us at the 2025 Alaska Academy Annual Education Summit, connect with fellow educators and professionals in the field of nutrition as we come together to share knowledge and collaborate on innovative ideas. Don’t miss this opportunity to network and learn from some of the best in the industry.

In this session I’ll be discussing Constipation. Constipation isn’t just about fiber and water—gut motility, pelvic floor function, and nervous system regulation play key roles. Too much fiber without movement can worsen symptoms, and excessive hydration alone won’t fix sluggish bowels. Pelvic floor dysfunction can prevent proper elimination, leading to straining and incomplete emptying. Stress and the gut-brain connection also impact motility, slowing digestion when the nervous system is dysregulated.

A multisystem approach is essential: balancing fiber intake, optimizing electrolytes, improving toilet posture, managing stress, and supporting gut microbiome health. Pelvic floor therapy and breathwork can retrain the body for better bowel movements. Dietitians play a critical role, but recognizing when to refer to a pelvic health specialist can lead to better long-term outcomes

Melissa Sundberg is an expert pelvic health physical therapist and owner of AK Pelvic Health & Wellness. Her expertise lies in Pelvic & Sexual Health, where she guides women and men on a journey to rediscover strength, pleasure, and intimacy within themselves and their bodies. She has been teaching a postpartum exercise classes for over 12 years to help over 850+ moms return to life and exercise with less leaks, pain or fear of injury. She enjoys spending her free time adventuring outdoors with her husband, two kids and their pups.
