Geneva Woods Birth Center

Geneva Woods Birth Center Geneva Woods Birth Center opened its doors in January 2002 after Midnight Sun Birth Center abruptly closed its doors in December 2001.

Geneva Woods Birth Center (aka "The Nest") is a former birth center, now multi-disciplinary women's & family health care practice offering lactation & postpartum care, pelvic PT, counseling, nutrition, menopause, & sexual health care. Not wanting to leave Anchorage with only one other birth center, Barbara and Karin invested their energies into forming a new birth center option for Anchorage families, and were able to open with state licensure and national accreditation only months after Midnight Sun closed. Geneva Woods Birth Center was originally built inside the medical office building in the Geneva Woods neighborhood on Rhone Circle, but moved to a new location at 2400 E 42nd Avenue in June of 2014. Seeking to find a more peaceful, quiet location outside of a medical office building, Barbara purchased the two lots on 42nd Ave. With her husband acting as general contractor, Barbara took the existing structure – which was originally built as a home – down to the studs and rebuilt it into a beautiful, state-of-the-art birth center. We opened our doors on Summer Solstice 2014, celebrating our 1058th birth that same day. On September 15, 2015, the 13-year relationship between Geneva Woods Birth Center and Midwifery & Women’s Health Care officially came to an end. As of that date, Geneva Woods Midwifery (Barbara Norton, CNM, and Dana Deane, CNM) will be the only midwives using Geneva Woods Birth Center. This 42nd Ave location will be the permanent home of Geneva Woods Birth Center. This serene, wooded lot and cozy, intimate building that is less than a mile away from Providence is perfect for us. In December we moved into the office addition and now have almost 3000 square feet of space on an acre with outdoor areas for families to labor and walk around. Geneva Woods Birth Center has been a nationally accredited birth center since we first opened our doors in 2002, and we continue to achieve the highest level of accreditation every time we are inspected. [What does this mean?] (link = https://www.birthcenteraccreditation.org/find-accredited-birth-centers/accreditation-is-the-mark-of-quality/) We strongly believe in the importance of quality control and maintaining a high standard of care. Our reputation for safety is unsurpassed in our community.

We have flu shots here, that can be given to anyone 6 months of age and older. We have early morning spots starting at 0715 on Wednesdays (except spring break) and some late spots to 6pm on Tuesdays, so kiddos don’t need to miss school to get one here.

This has been a ROUGH flu year, with Influenza A being the major strain (with H5N1 possibly being more widespread than we know, as that comes up on rapid tests as Influenza A but further sybtyping is often not done). This season’s flu shot was well-targeted, and it absolutely helps lower the severity of the illness in those who catch it.

The last baby has been born at Geneva Woods Birth Center, shortly after midnight on NYE, welcomed into the world by mom, dad, Barbara, Karin and Jen, just like some of the very first births here in 2002! Our hearts are so full from the wonderful experiences we’ve had with the-almost 2000 births here, and all the clients who have trusted us over the years. As our birth chapter closes, we look forward to the next chapter of continuing to support moms and families with lactation and postpartum care, and “midwifing” women through perimenopause, among lots of other services. Here’s to a great 2025 and beyond!

Jen Allison, LPN, IBCLC celebrated her 22-year anniversary of working for Geneva Woods Birth Center and Barbara Norton! It all started with a cold call to the birth center in November of 2002, asking if we “needed a nurse…” Barb thought about it for a minute and said “sure, would could use a nurse!” Jen has served our clients as an office nurse and birth assistant, before earning her IBCLC certification, and also becoming a doula, helping hundreds of families to welcome their babies into the world and nourish them per their breastfeeding goals. We couldn’t be more grateful that Jen found her way to our practice and office family!

Our Story

Geneva Woods Birth Center is the place to go for a safe and peaceful alternative to traditional hospital births. Serving the communities of Anchorage and sounding areas, our birthing center provides a welcoming space where women can bring a new member of their family into the world under the supervision of Certified Nurse Midwives. In addition to birthing services, they also offer an array of OB/GYN and family planning services. Geneva Woods Birth Center’s certified midwives can assist births both at a hospital and at the birthing center, and can even arrange for a water birth. If you have a low-risk pregnancy without complications and are planning on a natural birth without medication, their birthing centers are a great option. Whatever you choose, an experienced midwife will walk you through the entire process—before, during, and after birth. Since 2002, the center’s experienced midwives have brought over 1,200 babies safely into the world. As part of their dedication to nurturing healthy women and families, Geneva Woods Birth Center also provides general women’s health services. Their OB/GYN specialists can perform cancer screenings, help with menopause preparation, and deliver infection treatment. They also assist in family planning and birth control measures. Accredited by the Commission for the Accreditation of Birth Centers, Geneva Woods Birth Center is happy to help your family grow. To find out more about their diverse services, visit their website. You can also call them directly at (907) 561-2626 to discuss your needs and set up an appointment.
