From a Taoist perspective, Dream, the reality we experience during sleep, is associated with some interesting concepts.

The top part of the character depicts a forest or grove, which is a mysterious realm in which the subconscious can explore pathways of hidden meanings.

Trees have a direct relationship to the Wood Element, and one of the biggest lessons they teach us is to Be Who You Are.

The bottom part of the character means evening or dusk. This is the time between Yin and Yang, the transition between light and dark. This in-between space speaks to change and transformation.

Evening and dusk belong to the Metal Element, which is about refinement and wisdom.

The ancient Taoists considered dreams to hold profound significance as a bridge to explore the nature of reality. Think of the famous “Butterly Dream” story:

Is the man dreaming of being a butterfly, or is the butterfly dreaming of being a man? Who is dreaming who? Or are they both dreaming each other?

So we end up with this mystical liminal realm where reality shifts into something else, and who we are is malleable. There are profound meanings that can be garnered, visitations and teachings that come through, and the Butterfly or Man is left unsolved.

In the next Medical QiGong Energy Healing class, Wood Element, we’ll be working with dreams and how to energetically induce them as a way to process layers of subconscious information that allows us to become more of Who We Are.

These special treatments can be done on yourself, or as a clinical treatments you do to someone else. They are profoundly changing.
