Men’s mental health is important for several interconnected reasons—social, physical, emotional, and economic. Here’s why it deserves real attention:

1. Men often face unique pressures

Many men grow up with messages like “be strong,” “don’t cry,” or “handle it yourself.” These expectations make it harder to express emotions or seek help, increasing the risk of unresolved stress, depression, and anxiety.

2. High rates of su***de among men

In many countries, men die by su***de at significantly higher rates than women. This isn’t because men experience fewer emotions—it’s often because stigma and social norms prevent them from reaching out before problems become overwhelming.

3. Mental and physical health are deeply connected

Untreated mental health issues can contribute to heart disease, substance misuse, chronic pain, sleep problems, and weakened immune function. Taking care of mental health improves overall health and longevity.

4. Healthy men support healthy families and communities

When men feel mentally well, they’re better partners, fathers, friends, and coworkers. Treatment and emotional awareness strengthen relationships and reduce conflict.

5. Work and financial stress hit hard

Men often feel pressure to be financial providers or maintain a certain image at work. This can lead to burnout, overworking, and untreated anxiety—especially if they feel they must “tough it out.”

6. Seeking help is a strength, not a weakness

Normalizing men’s mental health encourages more men to talk openly, seek therapy, and support one another. This reduces stigma for everyone, not just men.

7. It saves lives

Early treatment and emotional support prevent crises. No one should suffer in silence.

Some thoughts can be unhelpful.
If a thought is:
Intrusive or distressing (e.g., anxiety loops, self-critical voices),
Distracting you from what matters, or
Fueling negative emotions or behaviors,
then it makes sense to want distance from it — not by erasing it, but by changing your relationship with it.

Healthier approaches than “getting rid of” thoughts include :
Acceptance: Notice the thought without judgment (“Ah, there’s that worry again.”).
Defusion (from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy): Instead of “I’m a failure,” say “I’m having the thought that I’m a failure.”
Refocusing: Shift attention toward something meaningful or sensory (breathing, sounds, touch).
Reflection: Sometimes the thought signals an unmet need or value worth exploring.

UPDATE 10/20:
Thanks to your kindness, our shelters have been well-supported with physical donations. To better match the evolving needs of Alaskans displaced by the storm, we are no longer accepting physical donations. The most effective way to continue supporting recovery efforts is through monetary donations, which help agencies provide long-term assistance to families rebuilding their lives. If you would like to continue to support Western Alaska relief efforts, we encourage you to join us in donating monetarily to one of the organizations below.

10/13
GCI is working with local emergency responders to quickly and safely restore service in communities impacted by Typhoon Halong. GCI employees have launched a donation drive to support these communities in Western Alaska. The storm caused significant damage, and many residents are in urgent need of basic supplies. GCI is conducting this effort in conjunction with other Alaska organizations, including the Alaska Native Heritage Center.

The Alaska Community Foundation has established a Western Alaska Disaster relief fund to provide support to affected communities. Please visit this link for more information: https://alaskacf.fcsuite.com/erp/donate/create/fund?funit_id=14833

We’ll share updates on restoration efforts as they become available.
