Cooking in occupational therapy isn’t just fun, it’s packed with purposeful skill-building!

This kiddo whipped up strawberry shortcake and worked on so much more than just a tasty treat! She also worked on fine motor skills, direction following, attention, task completion, and sensory exploration.

Who knew that filling a Cloud Nine crash pillow could be so fun?

We addressed upper extremity strength, bilateral coordination, and problem solving while filling the cloud with foam squares. Then, we had some fun jumping and crashing, which addressed proprioception for body awareness. Finally, we turned the box into a hide-out for pretend play and handwriting practice!

One box. So many skills. Endless imagination. That’s the magic of pediatric OT! 💛

🔨 Little hands, BIG skills! 🔨

When children practice hammering, they’re building:
🖐️ Hand strength & endurance – Those tiny muscles get a serious workout
🎯 Hand–eye coordination – Watching the nail and guiding the hammer takes focus
🤝 Bilateral coordination – One hand stabilizes while the other does the work
🧠 Motor planning – Figuring out how hard, where to aim, and what comes next
👀 Visual attention – Keeping eyes on a small target improves visual-motor skills

Functional, hands-on tasks like this help kids develop the foundational skills they need for dressing, writing, cutting with scissors, and so much more!

Practicing on unstable surfaces helps kids build:
❄️ Balance reactions – learning how to catch themselves when the ground shifts
❄️ Core and hip strength – the muscles that keep them upright when footing isn’t solid
❄️ Body awareness (proprioception) – knowing where their body is without looking
❄️ Motor planning – figuring out how to move safely through tricky terrain

All of these skills are exactly what they need when walking on snowy sidewalks, icy parking lots, sandy beaches, or grassy playgrounds. Real life isn’t flat and predictable — so therapy shouldn’t be either!
