Alaska IBEW

Alaska IBEW The IBEW is among the world’s strongest labor organizations, representing workers in a range of skilled occupations in a wide variety of fields.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers was founded in St. Louis, Missouri on November 28, 1891. IBEW Local 1547 was chartered in Alaska on October 1, 1946, assuming the jurisdiction of IBEW work in Alaska from Local 46 in Seattle, and continues to advocate for safety and protection of the rights of electrical and communications workers, as well as local government employees, health ca

re industry employees, and many more non-construction occupations. Local 1547 represents workers in many diverse construction classifications including power linemen, inside wiremen, power plant workers and technicians, mechanics, warehouse workers, line clearance tree trimmers and heavy equipment operators. Classifications in communications include telephone linemen, installation and repair workers, telephone operators, central office technicians, cable maintenance workers, and fiber optic specialists, just to name a few. We also take pride in knowing that our efforts in strengthening safety and worker rights benefit many other workers in our state, not just those we represent. Traditionally, people think of IBEW members as people who work with electricity—but over the years, other classifications have joined the ranks of Local 1547. Some of the many classifications we represent are: cooks, certified nursing assistants, clerks, accounting specialists, engineers, city and municipal employees, property management workers, maintenance custodians, gardeners, librarians, plant services workers, programmers, radar operators, cashiers and x-ray technicians. With close to 5000 members, IBEW Local 1547 is, we believe, one of the strongest unions in the state of Alaska.

Unit 102 members came together to participate in the Golden Heart Clean Up Day last weekend.

From keeping our communities clean to showing what union pride looks like in action, our members continue to step up both on and off the job. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time to help make Fairbanks shine!

IBEW Local 1547 in Petersburg last week for our member picnic during Little Norway Festival.

We were proud to spend time with members and their families in one of Southeast Alaska’s great communities, where we represent the hardworking employees at Petersburg Municipal Light & Power, along with construction members from contractors like First City Electric.

One of the best parts of being One State, One Local is seeing IBEW brothers and sisters from across Alaska show up, connect, and support each other whether they’re utility, construction, healthcare workers, or public sector members.

The Little Norway Festival is a huge part of Petersburg’s identity, celebrating the town’s deep Norwegian roots and fishing heritage, and it made for the perfect backdrop to bring everyone together. Good food, great conversations, a few laughs around the fire, and a reminder that union strength is built person to person, community to community.

Fun fact: over 400 root beer floats were given out this year! ⚡️

THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS FOR A SUCCESSFUL BLITZ!

IBEW Local 1547’s 5th Annual Blitz was a great success. This year’s “Blitzin in Alaska” reached nearly 400 doorsteps over three nights in the Mat-Su Valley and Anchorage. This year saw a record turnout of volunteers, with an average of 41 per night. This blitz also had our highest ever engagement percentage at 70%!

Volunteers from eleven local unions covering northern Idaho, Washington, Oregon and California as well as representatives from the IBEW 9th District joined Local 1547 members over three nights to knock on doors of non-union electricians and talk about the benefits of joining the IBEW.

The blitz was concluded with a job fair. Fullford Electric, All Wire and Norther Powerline Constructors were all present at this event. Non-Union project managers, foreman, journeyman, and apprentices attended the event seeking more information about how to join IBEW Local 1547. Thank you to all our volunteers who made these events a success!

Brothers and Sisters,

We are sharing this GoFundMe in support of Brother Mark Roullier and his son Dalton, who is an IBEW Apprentice, following the unexpected passing of their wife and mother, Nichole Roullier, on May 9, 2026.

The fundraiser has been created to help with funeral arrangements, memorial services, and other expenses during this difficult time. Any donation, no matter the amount, or simply sharing the fundraiser, would be greatly appreciated.

Please keep Brother Mark and the Roullier family in your thoughts as they honor Nichole’s memory.

It’s time for Alaska Power and Telephone Company to respect the rights of its workers and bargain in good faith.

Former Upper Lynn Canal AP&T lineman Jordan Frost said from his perspective, what workers need in both the Upper Lynn Canal and on Prince of Wales is community support and for people in the communities to push the company to go to the bargaining table.

A new group of Alaska Power and Telephone employees on Prince of Wales Island has voted to unionize, Haines crews may fill in event of strike.

Our very own Susanna Mishler is one of 8 storytellers in the 3rd annual Teacher Tales at the Bear Tooth Theater on Wednesday, April 29 at 6:00 pm. Susanna is a Wireman Instructor at the Tom Cashen Electrical Apprenticeship Program in Anchorage.

This show is similar to Arctic Entries where people from the local community tell a 8-minute true story from their lives. The stories are rehearsed and coached and performed. This is not an "open mic" but something that the storytellers have practiced.

Susanna is telling her story about becoming an electrician, being a woman in the trades, and becoming a teacher of her trade. She is proud to be included as a tradesperson and looking forward to highlighting the training we do in organized trades. Susanna would love to have IBEW members attend and cheer her on.

Yesterday, Business Manager Doug Tansy addressed the Matanuska Electric Association Board of Directors ahead of contract negotiations that will be opening later this year. Business Manager Tansy spoke about the importance of addressing Alaska’s energy, electric reliability, and workforce issues together with trust and collaboration. He stressed the important role that IBEW 1547 members play in keeping the lights on and ensuring Alaska’s Railbelt utilities run efficiently and reliably.

Business Manager Tansy’s visit to MEA illustrates a larger prioritization of Alaska’s fastest growing borough by IBEW 1547.
