It's that time of year! Spring and Breakup have been teasing us since January, and Summer is now in sight, and that means “100 Miles in May” is upon us! 100 Miles in May is a fun way to get in shape for summer and also raise funds for the Healthy Futures program here in Alaska.

We are putting together a team for "100 Miles in May" this year and would love for you to join us! Our team name is: Feet the Heat! Feel free to invite friends and family to join our team as well.

The team fee has been taken care of by the office, though if you are interested you can raise money on your own for Healthy Futures as well. It is a fun and friendly competition. It's not just for runners, ultra athletes, or gym bros. All activities convert to miles. You can set a goal that works for you and log your activities of choice for the month. Join our team or the opposition, just get out there and be active in May!

The 100 Miles in May Challenge is a fundraiser for the Healthy Futures program, which works to empower Alaska's youth to build the habit of daily physical activity.

Custom orthotics are specially made arch supports individually designed to support and comfort your unique foot structure and pathology (problems). They match the contours of your feet precisely and are designed for the way you move.

You should consider custom orthotics if:
• Over the counter shoe inserts or different shoes have not adequately alleviated pain and discomfort
• Weightbearing causes chronic foot pain
• Activity causes foot pain
• Foot pain is limiting exercise or other physical activity

If you are simply looking for extra cushioning or support, you may wish to try an over-the-counter shoe insert first. If you have serious pain or discomfort, however, schedule an appointment to evaluate whether custom orthotics would be right for you. Additional treatments, including appropriate shoes and exercises to improve the comfort and function of your feet, will also be discussed.

Dr. Jared Kern has been providing advanced foot and ankle care in Alaska for 14 years. From 2011 through 2024 he was part of the now dissolved Alaska Foot and Ankle Specialists. He is excited to continue providing great care to Alaskans with the new clinic Chugach Sports Foot and Ankle. His focus is on helping patients live and achieve an active lifestyle. Foot and ankle function are an important, often overlooked out of sight out of mind component to physical activity. We specialize in custom orthotic therapy and are the only clinic in the state offering onsite 3D orthotic printing.

Dr. Kern is double ABFAS board certified in both Foot Surgery, and Reconstructive Rearfoot and Ankle Surgery. He is also the first, and so far, only podiatrist to have earned the Diploma in Mountain Medicine (DiMM) certification.

As a child growing up in the Midwest, with its rolling hills, fields of corn and soybeans, fireflies blinking at night, and cicadas droning during hot humid summers, the call of the north was strong for Dr. Kern. The rallying cry “Yukon Ho” from Calvin and Hobbes was formative. His requests to move north to Alaska went unheeded by parents busy providing for the family. With the emancipation of adulthood, Dr. Kern moved north as quickly as he could, first to Washington, then to Alaska. The mountains, rivers, forests, and wilderness, which draw so many to Alaska, are a source of great fulfillment for him.

Dr. Kern’s first and primary loves in the outdoors are road and trail running and photography. He enjoys skiing in its many varieties, Alpine, Nordic skating, Nordic classic, and backcountry touring. In the warmer months mountain biking, whitewater kayaking, whitewater rafting, packrafting, and sea kayaking are priorities.

Custom orthotic 3D printing in house! A first for the state of Alaska! This unlocks a greater degree of customization and ability to fit a custom device in sports shoe gear, even low volume shoes like cleats. The 3D printing lattice creates an orthotic device which is supportive where you want it, and flexible where you don't.
