Some of the scenes from beautiful Toksook Bay Alaska.

When on rural rotations we get the opportunity to travel to remote villages and experience the community and provide much needed health care. Some villages dont have providers at all. Most villages are fortunate enough to have community health aides but unfortunately not all. The people are incredible, kind, and resilient. What a joy it was to spend time in this beautiful village.

If you want to learn more about community health aides send us a message or comment below. Alaska is so unique and the only place in the country try to have CHAs.

Intern spotlight!

Dr. Matthew Collicott, DO

Hometown: West Lafayette, IN

Hobbies: Wakeboarding, snowboarding, weightlifting, trail running, and recently started mountain biking! I love watching my local sports teams (Purdue Boilermakers, Pacers, and Colts). More than anything, I cherish spending time with my incredible friends and family.

Why AKFMR?
Training: An unopposed residency focused on full-scope family medicine at a large tertiary care center – very unique!
Location: Alaska is truly a wonderful place to live! See the last two pictures for proof – I took the second-to-last one shortly after crossing the border into AK from Canada. The outdoor opportunities available to residents here are truly endless. AK really is the world’s biggest playground, and I can’t wait to explore as much as possible over the next 3+ years… I think my dog (Samson) feels the same way :)
People: The community within our residency is what makes this place special. The diversity of backgrounds, ideas, personalities, and skills creates an ideal learning environment. Most importantly, the support among residents, faculty, and staff is unmatched.

YKHC and working in Bethel is one of the incredible opportunities we get working in rural Alaska. Bethel is off the road system so you must fly in and out. The YKHC hospital in Bethel is the regional hub for all the surrounding villages. As residents we get to be a part of Medevacs from those surrounding villages. Amy Winczura is spending the next six weeks in Bethel and has already gotten to fly on multiple medevac trips, see the last two pics for the views!

Meet one of our incredible Residency Program Team members, Maia! We are so lucky to have such an incredible hard working team that keeps everything running!

Maia has lived in Alaska since she was 7 years old and loves hiking, cooking, and learning new languages.

She loves working with AKFMR, the most special part being spending time her incredible boss and coworkers. She uses a million spreadsheets managing a sudoku-esque schedule for all residents, faculty, and locums providers. She loves the amount of people she can support and impact without being patient facing!

We appreciate all you do Maia!

Dr. Jaden Arnold, DO

Hometown: Bountiful, UT

Hobbies: Hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, basically anything outside

Why AKFMR: I chose AKFMR because it had the perfect blend of rural medicine and access to conveniences, being in a reasonably large city. I was pleasantly surprised by the access to the outdoors when we got here. Being from Utah and living about 10 minutes from the base of one of the big ski resort canyons, I thought we had amazing access, but it’s nothing compared to Alaska. It’s a pretty incredible thing to put in a 12 hour day at the hospital and still be able to drive a short distance and get a couple hours of world class fishing or hiking in with my little family.
Second pic seen here is some moose seen in our own backyard!
