Intern spotlight!

Dr. Syed Sami, MD

Hometown: Born and raised in the vibrant and diverse city of Karachi, Pakistan, I spent most of my early life immersed in its fast-paced, energetic culture. Three years ago, I traded the hustle for the sunny beaches of Tampa, Florida — and now, I’ve embraced a whole new adventure in the breathtaking mountains of Anchorage, Alaska.

Hobbies: I’m passionate about cricket, ping pong, and watching movies on the big screen. A nature lover at heart, I enjoy traveling, exploring new places, and soaking in the beauty of the outdoors — from beaches to mountain trails.

Why AKFMR: I chose the Alaska Family Medicine Residency because I’ve always had a deep passion for serving underserved and remote communities. I wanted to train in an environment that not only challenges me but also helps me learn, grow, and truly make a difference.

Since joining the program, I’ve been incredibly grateful to find exactly what I was looking for — and more. I’ve had the privilege of working alongside amazing co-residents, supportive seniors, a dedicated faculty, and a compassionate medical and support staff. The sense of community here is unmatched.

Coming to Anchorage and joining this residency has truly been one of the best decisions of my life.

Intern spotlight! And it’s a special one as we get to welcome a new AKFMR family member as they recently welcomed their second baby boy into the world.

Dr. Tyler Downs, DO

Hometown: Pleasant Grove, Utah

Hobbies: Mountain biking, skiing, fishing, and hanging out with my wife and two boys (one of them is 1 week old..)

Why AKFMR: my wife and I are both from Utah, but met while doing seasonal work in Ketchikan. Since then we have always wanted to make our way back to Alaska. Not only did the program here give us that opportunity, but I was also drawn to the many unique learning opportunities we have through our rural and wilderness medicine curriculum.

Intern spotlight!

Dr. Peter Woolley, DO.

Hometown:
I’m from Littleton, Colorado, where I was born and raised. I completed my undergraduate degree in pre-medicine and chemistry at the University of Northern Colorado. After college, I served 4½ years in the Marine Corps. I went on to earn a master’s degree in biomedical science from Colorado State University and attended medical school at Rocky Vista University in Parker, Colorado.

Hobbies:
I love spending time outdoors—hiking, trail running, mountain biking, camping, and exploring. I’ve recently fallen in love with salmon fishing and am looking forward to ice fishing this winter. I’m also an avid snowboarder. At home, I enjoy music, TV, and snuggling up with a good book (I’m a bit of a bookworm). Most of all, I cherish time with my wonderful family—my amazing wife and our two daughters, who are starting fourth and second grade. Oh, and I love my dog!

Why AKFMR?:
I chose the Alaska Family Medicine Residency for its unmatched training experience, incredible location, and the opportunity to serve a diverse and vibrant community. The broad scope of practice here aligns perfectly with my goal of working in rural medicine in the future. I truly believe this program offers the best path to achieving that dream. And when it comes to outdoor access, Alaska is second to none.

Intern spotlight! Meet Dr. Natalia Makushina, MD.

Hometown: Soldotna, AK

Hobbies: cross-country and downhill skiing, backpacking, reading.

Why AKFMR: In 2018, I came to Alaska, and since then, I have been living in the place that conquered my heart forever. To me, Alaska is not only about an incredible adventure. Above all, it is about people, who are our patients, friends, colleagues. People who are free thinkers and independent, tough and warmhearted, straight shooters and sincere, humble and open for help. People who don’t need to prove their worth as a person, their social state, material possessions, education. Just their living here is proof enough! People who became my family and made it possible to call Alaska home. This is my very special privilege to go through the residency training in the place I belong to and serve to people I love.
