Fight against “co-caring” and increased ratios:

Management has introduced “Co-Caring” to PCU and 4-North. Under this plan, there will be fewer nurses on the floor and each nurse will take on an additional patient. To help with the extra workload, administration is adding more PCTs to the floor and including virtual nurses who support bedside nurses via camera and video in the patient’s room. In early November, PCU will go up to 5:1; 4-North, 6:1. We are very concerned for the safety and overall care of our patients.

What have we been doing to raise concerns?
Nurses from 4N and PCU raised questions and concerns during Providence’s “town hall” and other meetings to discuss the issue.

We have asserted our union rights to negotiate over significant changes to working conditions by issuing a “Demand to Bargain”.

An overwhelming majority of the nurses who work on 4N and PCU signed a petition, again outlining our concerns and demanding that ratios do not increase.

Nurses are now recording short videos talking about the safety concerns with ratio changes and problems with using virtual nurses to justify increased ratios.

On Friday, 10/25, some nurses from 4N and PCU, along with AaNA nurse leaders, met with several elected officials to explain this issue and ask for their support. These conversations were encouraging and we are hopeful for their collaboration in the future.

What’s Next?

We will be hosting a Press Conference on Wednesday, 10/30, 10:00 AM on the NW corner of Providence Way and Alumni Dr.

At this conference, we will be outlining the dangers of unsafe nurse-patient ratios as well as announcing our legal filling of unfair labor practices against the facility. We ask nurses that are not working to attend this event and for everyone to show support by wearing red on 10/30.

Please RSVP here: https://actionnetwork.org/events/press-conference-pamc-nurses-fight-increased-nursepatient-ratios/

Please note that not submitting an RSVP does not mean you cannot attend.

Other actions you can take to support safe patient ratios:
Wear red on Wednesday, 10/30

Record a video on why safe staffing is important (15-30 seconds)—email them to terra@aknurse.org

Document missed breaks and lunches in Kronos, and fill out unsafe staffing reports (find forms or QR code in your break room)4N and PCU right now, and to call for solidarity across all of Providence.

'Tis the season for Holiday Helping Hands!

The nominations period is now open for our third annual member assistance program.

Holiday Helping Hands supports AaNA members who are coping with difficult circumstances and may not have the means to purchase gifts or holiday meals for their families.

Here’s how it works:

Today through December 1st, we are accepting applications for nurses in need.

You can apply for yourself or nominate a fellow nurse who could use some extra assistance.

If you are a member of AaNA, you are eligible to apply. If you are facing financial stress due to unemployment, serious health concerns, fleeing domestic violence, family loss, etc. we want to help you!

On the application, tell us why your family could use a helping hand and what your specific needs are (gifts for children or spouse, groceries for meal, decorations, etc.)

When the application period closes, our team will approve requests for help and reach out to participating nurse families.

This is where the rest of you come in! We will post wish lists and begin accepting donations after December 7th. With your help, we can spread holiday cheer to our colleagues in need.

An email was sent out on Thursday! Check junk folders.
