Flexion bias in back pain refers to a condition where bending forward (flexion) tends to relieve pain, while arching backward (extension) worsens it. This is often seen in individuals with spinal stenosis, spondylosis, or spondylolisthesis as well as certain types of disc bulges or herniations.
Decompression is the reduction of intradiscal pressures to relieve pain. When decompression is performed with a flexion bias, it takes pressure off the disc and nerves, providing relief. Flexion Decompression or Flexion-Distraction is a specialized technique used to reduce mechanical nerve compression by lowering disc pressure on the nerve and increasing the size of the nerve opening that the nerve exits from the spine. This narrowing of the nerve openings is called spinal stenosis, and our goal of treatment is to reduce that pressure and improve disability and quality of life's activities.
Matching the right care with the problem is the key! Not all Decompression is the same.
