“Andalusia Volunteer Ambulance serving an area including Andalusia, Taylor Ridge, Edgington, Reynolds, Buffalo Prairie, and Illinois City, and westward toward the Mississippi River, makes the Andalusia Volunteer Ambulance Service truly unique in many ways.” Mary Shovar wrote in her book Home on the River…in Andalusia, Illinois, copyright 1983
A volunteer service was formed, and the first day of operation was June 1, 1975. At that time, 26 volunteers had received training to become EMTs (80 hours of training, with their own money), and 12 more were enrolled in classes. The ambulance, a hearse, was donated by United Ambulance. A patient was asked to donate $35 per call and $1 for each mile the ambulance traveled to help raise funds for the service.
Fast forward to today, June 1, 2025, the Andalusia Ambulance has been proudly serving the Andalusia and surrounding communities for 50 years! We currently have 14 active EMS providers, along with a full-time paramedic staffed by Elite Industrial. The EMT class currently is over 120 hours, with 60 hours of continuing education every 4 years. We have two ambulances, 1 John 20 was bought new in 2018, and 1 John 26 was bought new in 2010, both are fully equipped to use in any emergency.
We are thankful for all our personnel who continue to help make this community a better place to live! This service is here due to the dedicated volunteers and generous support of the community. The reward for volunteering is knowing that you helped someone in their time of need. That you made the difference! Thank you, past and present volunteers!!!
