🩵 We can reduce the risk of child abuse when parents understand how children grow and develop.

🩵 When families know normal childhood milestones in growth and development, they can respond better to the child’s behavior.

🩵 Knowing what to expect can help to prevent harsh discipline or emotional withdrawal.

🩵 Knowing what to expect may also alert a parent when something is not “typical”.

💜 For 10 years, Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA, Inc.) has established and led the Global Black Maternal Health Movement, advancing Black-led solutions to address maternal health care inequities in the U.S. and globally.

💜 BMMA believes that every person deserves access to quality and holistic health care.

💜 Founded by BMMA, Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW) is an annual weeklong campaign aimed at amplifying the voices of Black Mamas and centering the values and traditions of the reproductive and birth justice movements.

💜 The BMHW26 theme, “Rooted in Justice and Joy”, honors the resilience and leadership of Black Mamas and birthing people while naming the systemic injustices that continue to shape Black Maternal Health outcomes. This theme reflects the power of Black-led perinatal, maternal, and reproductive health organizations to drive healing, restoration, and a future where Black families can thrive with dignity and care.

💜 Developing a culturally responsive and congruent workforce is critical—one that understands systemic racism, addresses bias, and provides person-centered, respectful, and affirming care for Black women and birthing people.

💜 BMHW26 highlights the need for sustainable solutions—ensuring Black Mamas receive high-quality care at every stage, from preconception to postpartum.

🩵 Children are safe when their families are strong, and families are
strong when the community surrounds them with support.

🩵 Pinwheels represent the happy, healthy childhood we want for every child. They also celebrate the limitless potential of children and
families when communities come together to support them. The spinning pinwheel shows us what that support can look like: with families at the center, each turn represents the systems, programs,
policies, and everyday acts of care that strengthen them and help them thrive.

Community doulas hold power by showing up where systems
fall short. We hold power in shared knowledge, cultural
wisdom, and the refusal to let anyone birth alone. Our power
lives in advocacy, in saying the hard things, and in protecting
choice and dignity. When we hold power together, we shift
outcomes, reclaim traditions, and create safer spaces for
every family.
