Our ability to empathize is one of the most beneficial connection tools we have as parents. But it must genuine to "work." When our empathy is genuine it can have a powerfully calming effect, particularly in the early years with children. I imagine that’s because our babies and toddlers are limited in their ability to communicate thoughts and emotions, so they’re not accustomed to feeling understood. When that happens… Whoa! What a wonderful surprise! They not only feel heard and understood, but also have the reassurance from one of the extremely important adults in their lives that it’s perfectly okay for them to feel what they’re feeling. It’s no wonder empathy can make children feel instantly better.

Yet for all the inspiring stories I hear from parents and professionals about the miraculous power of empathy, I also hear concerns about empathy not working... I discuss that in my article:
"When Empathy Doesn’t Work" which is free to read on my website and I'll link it here in the replies. I hope it's helpful to you! x Janet

Family meals are more than just eating together; they shape your child’s brain, social skills, and academic success. Studies show that children who share dinner with their family four or more times a week perform better in school, with higher grades and improved focus.

The benefits come from more than nutrition. Conversations around the table help children develop language skills, problem-solving abilities, and emotional intelligence. Sharing mealtimes provides opportunities for guidance, encouragement, and modeling healthy habits, all of which contribute to stronger cognitive and social development.

Consistency matters. Regular family meals create a structured environment that supports learning, reduces stress, and encourages positive behavior. Children who participate in these routines feel a sense of security and belonging, which also promotes motivation and confidence in academic tasks.

Even busy schedules can accommodate family meals. Simple strategies include setting aside a few nights a week for shared dinners, involving children in meal preparation, or making breakfast a family ritual when dinner isn’t possible.

By prioritizing family mealtime, parents invest in their child’s education, emotional growth, and overall well-being. The effects extend far beyond the table, helping children thrive both in school and in life.

Amid the prolonged government shutdown, which is now the longest in American history, SNAP benefits have become a political football. In previous shutdowns, emergency funds have been used to cover the program, which serves around 42 million Americans. But the Trump Administration has declined to do so. A number of states have stepped in to cover the gap, or to provide additional money to food banks; Texas, which has a multibillion-dollar rainy-day fund, has done neither. Rachel Monroe follows Texas residents who are feeling the pain of the food-assistance program’s suspension. Read more: https://newyorkermag.visitlink.me/mZlXXK
