When a player makes a good play during a game; makes a big tackle, hits a tough shot, gets a point-saving dig, or scores a hat trick and they are asked about it later, they will almost always say a variation of the same thing: I just reacted to what was around me. This is kind of true. While they absolutely reacted to the play, they also made possibly hundreds of high-speed, accurate decisions when deciding what to do with the situation presented to them. This is done using the Frontal Lobe of the brain and specifically the prefrontal cortex. The prefrontal cortex controls our executive decision making whether that be objective short-term decision making on the field, how we respond socially, and how we plan long-term. There are other purposes of the prefrontal cortex but we will just focus on this decision-making aspect. Every game, an athlete uses their prefrontal cortex to makes thousands of complex decisions. This means that training this part of the brain is invaluable. This can help make sharper decisions and reduce "brain fog" that can be costly when an athlete gets tired and makes a bad decision late in a game. Go- NO Go drills can help athletes make faster, more efficient, and more effective decisions when they decide to stay or react to what happens around them while training that prefrontal cortex to be more reliable in both the instant reaction and the long term when battling fatigue.
