IAMU’s inhouse training facilities offer electric utility members many educational opportunities, including overhead and underground electric workshops, metering workshops and more. Gas Services: IAMU offers its member gas utilities assistance with system installation, upgrades and compliance education. Midwest Regional Gas Operators Workshop is held each fall at IAMU’s Training &
Office Complex. Recent advances have resulted in national attention for IAMU’s gas training programs. Water Services: IAMU provides assistance with water and wastewater analysis, maintenance, compliance, education and information for its more than 500 municipal water utility members. The annual Water and Wastewater Operators
Workshop is always well-attended. In-house facilities include a working water laboratory. Telecommunication Services: IAMU’s member utilities involved in the growing
arena of municipal telecommunication can obtain the latest legislative and technical information, advice on managing a system and professional contacts to assist with system development. Energy Services: IAMU provides energy efficiency services to member utilities, including assistance in the formation and implementation of energy efficiency programs, resource planning and a consumer publication for utility customers. Technical & Environmental Services: IAMU promotes engineering considerations and stewardship of natural resources, including support and resources for stormwater management programs through the Iowa Storm Water Education Program, ISWEP (www.iowastormwater.org)
Legislative & Regulatory: Through lobbying of the Iowa Legislature by IAMU
representatives, the needs and concerns of Iowa’s municipal utilities are presented to state lawmakers each session. Efforts are made to ensure that passage
of any utility-related bills represents the best interests of IAMU’s members. Tracking of bills keeps membership informed as legislative sessions progress. Job Training & Safety: IAMU maintains active safety committees and workshops for electric, gas and water utilities. IAMU Safety Clusters have been established
throughout the state to bring current, effective job safety to local communities. Through meetings held on-site at member cities and at IAMU’s Training & Office Complex, a wide variety of classes are available to IAMU members. Meetings & Workshops: IAMU offers an annual general membership conference,
regional meetings and individual workshops which cover a wide variety of topics. Member city and utility employees receive valuable training, certifications
required for their jobs and the chance to network with peers and industry professionals. Drug & Alcohol Testing: IAMU provides assistance to its members regarding
compliance with federal drug and alcohol testing requirements through the Drug & Alcohol Testing Alliance (DATA) program. Training on Demand: IAMU members can access more than 60 individual
training courses online with IAMU’s Training on Demand. Students may work independently or under the guidance of a supervisor to enhance their skills and
value to their employer and customers. GIS-GPS Services: IAMU now offers GIS and GPS mapping services to member utilities. Workshops are offered to enhance members’ skills and knowledge in this area and to allow them to implement their own mapping systems as a money-saving option. Insurance Programs: The IAMU Safety Group Insurance Program offers competitive, comprehensive insurance to members. IAMU also endorses a fully funded health and life program.
