📣 This is our last SOA Tenant Spotlight Evening Announcement 📣,as we feature…Anita H 👏!

Anita was born in January 1928 in Arcadia, Iowa and grew up on the farm near Arcadia. She was the middle of 13 kids in her family, “6 siblings were older and 6 siblings were younger”. She describes her childhood home 🏡 as “very nice & very happy”. She attended the Catholic Church ⛪️ as a child, received her first communion there, and also married there.

Anita graduated 🎓from highschool in 1945 with 17 members in her senior class and stated her favorite subject was math.

Anita’s first job was working in a grocery store and thru the years, she worked in various offices and in many different positions.

She got married in May of 1951, had 5 kids (4 girls and 1 boy), and now has 8 grandchildren (7 granddaughters and only 1 grandson)🥰. Anita says her significant accomplishments include “my children-they all have good jobs!”

Anita, in the past, has done a lot of crocheting 🧶 and has always enjoyed doing puzzles 🧩. She joined our Suites of Ankeny family in March 2025. Some of Anita’s other favorites 🤩 are:

📣 Announcement, Announcement 📣 Up next we have SOA Tenant Spotlight…Linda W 👏!

Linda was born on August 19th in Tingley, Iowa. She has lived in the towns of Tingley, Des Moines, Iowa City, North Liberty, and Ankeny. She joined our SOA Family in March of this year.

Linda says she grew up with one sister and one brother and attended the United Methodist Church ⛪️. Special memories in highschool were playing basketball 🏀 in the State Tournaments in both 1952 and 1954. She graduated in 1954 as the Valedictorian 🎓and her senior class had only 10 students! Linda then went onto college for one year in Tarkio, Missouri.

Linda met her spouse thru school (“he was 2 years ahead of me”) and she married 👰‍♀️ on June 11, 1955. Together they raised 4 children (3 boys and 1 girl) and Linda said she has eight grandkids🥰. Linda says her most significant accomplishment is “family” and her words of wisdom she extends to all her family is “learn from your mistakes “.

Linda’s first job was at Bankers Life and when asked what she liked about it, Linda smiled 😃and replied “ the money!” 💵

SOA Activity-BINGO (but she also has attended our ladies’ tea 🫖 parties 🎉 in the past)

Here’s our very next SOA tenant shoutout & featured spotlight…Winifred “Jeane” T 👏❤️👏!

Jeane was born in Gretenger, Iowa at the end of November back in 1927 and says that she lived on a farm in Milford and its surrounding areas. She grew up with 2 brothers and recalls these special memories of childhood: “I lived near a lake so we went swimming every day and then in winters, we went sledding at night”.

Jeane attended a little country church ⛪️, Little Sioux Lutheran, as a child and has enjoyed being at Lutheran church services her whole life. Jeane and her family believe in God, prayer 🙏, and “being good & friendly towards others”.

She graduated 👩‍🎓 from highschool in 1947 and remembers “having g lots of fun”, enjoying Home Ec class, and skiing at night (on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays). Jeane says she liked sports, but there were not any highschool teams available for women.

Jeane’s first job was as a telephone ☎️ operator and stated that was also her profession in Spirit Lake and that she”loved everything about it!”

Jeane met her spouse at Arnold’s Park School 🏫, as he was already attending and she went there for 3 years. She went to dances 💃 every Sunday night. They were married ❤️❤️on July 11, 1948 and had a special two-day honeymoon to Clear Lake, Iowa. They raised 3 children (2 boys and 1 girl) together and she now has 9 grandchildren.

Jeane describes herself as “happy and having lots of friends” and she has enjoyed traveling 🧳 in the past. She actually went to Europe on a bus 🚌 trip and spent 20 years in Arizona (during the winter ❄️ months).

Jeane moved into her Suites of Ankeny apartment in December 2024. She shared some of her favorites 🤩 below:

Announcement Of The Next SOA Tenant Spotlight…Shirley Ann S!
📣👏😍❤️📣

Shirley was born on May 29th and grew up in Decorah, Iowa. She describes her favorite childhood memories of: trout fishing 🎣 with her dad, playing lacrosse 🥍, shopping 🛍️, going to youth groups with friends from both the Lutheran & Catholic Church ⛪️, and hanging out with her siblings (3 sisters and 1 brother).

Shirley’s faith 🙏has always been important to her. She recalls attending church as a child and the special memory of listening to “a minister fresh out of college who came in & gave really good sermons!” Her family believes in prayers, God, Bible reading 📖, attending church, and “being with friends that were good”.

She graduated 👩‍🎓 high school in 1958 and liked Home Ec the best as “the class that helped prepare you for life after high school”. Shirley played both basketball 🏀 and volleyball 🏐 during her highschool years. When asked what she’d like to do over, she replied “ Go to college”.

Shirley’s first job was as a babysitter and said her professional job was “working at Collins in Cedar Rapids”. She met her spouse during her senior year of high school. Shirley said being married to Marvin and raising 3 kids (2 boys & 1 girl) is what she is most proud of. She now has 6 grandkids in her family to love & support 🥰!

Shirley has lived in Decorah, Cedar Rapids, and Ankeny. She has been a part of our SOA family since February 2025. She described herself as being “shy” and “not always being open” to new things, but she does “like to know what’s going on in the building/around here”…😉

She also described her words of wisdom very simply in this way: “When you get upset, take time to cool down and not just get mad”.

Shirley’s Favorites 🤩:
Music 🎶-“everything”…from country, Rock & Roll, to church music/hymns
Book 📖-“I have several”
Food 😋-“minute steaks”

📣 SOA Tenant Spotlight Announcement 📣
Next up, we feature Arla Jane V 👏❤️😍!

Arla celebrated a birthday 🥳 this past month and she was born on May 24th on a farm near Monroe, Iowa. Places she has lived include Ames, Iowa; Houston, Texas; Des Moines, Iowa; and Ankeny, Iowa. Arla has been at the Suites of Ankeny since October 2024.

Arla says she has “way too many childhood memories” to pick her favorite and that she had 3 sisters in her family. Arla attended church ⛪️ as a child every Sunday evening. She is a member of the Reformed (Dutch) Church.

She graduated from high school in 1953 and liked Home Ec class the best and played saxophone 🎷 in the band. Arla went onto attend college in Pella (at Central), in Ames (at Iowa State), and in Des Moines (at Drake).

Arla’s first car 🚘 was a 1951 Chevy convertible and her 1st job was working at the Iowa State Library 📚. Later in life, Arla worked as a secretary with Heartland Agency and “really enjoyed the people I worked with”.

Arla met her husband Ken (from an introduction by a friend) and they were married June 10, 1955. Together they raised 3 children & now have 8 grandchildren. Arla often attends the SOA intergenerational activities when kids, students, and youth volunteers are part of our programming, including watching a recent dance recital in our dining room.

Arla, herself, is a past square dancer and also enjoys sewing 🧵 🪡 and completing puzzles 🧩. Other favorites 🤩 of Arla include:

Movie 🎥-“Pretty Woman”
Scripture/Bible Verse📖-“I know a lot of them”

Happy Sunday and we want to announce 📣 throughout the day all of our remaining SOA Tenant Spotlights, starting with Louise V! 👏📣

Louise V, who describes herself as a “gracious old lady that has learned to adjust to certain things”, was born on a farm in Harcourt, Iowa in May 1932. She says her child memories are “a lot of good ones” and stated that “even though we were poor (like everyone was during the depression), we made the best of times”. Louise had 1 brother & 1 sister and she was the baby in the family. She attended the Methodist Church ⛪️ as a child and also faithfully went to Sunday School. She got thru tough times in her life by the “strength of prayers”!

Thru the years, Louise has lived in Iowa towns of Harcourt, Ohrville, Garden Grove, Ankeny, and Ottumwa. She then moved back to Ankeny. Louise has lived with our Suites of Ankeny family since January 2025.

Louise graduated from high school in 1950, as 1 of 7 kids in her class. She remembers playing basketball 🏀 & watching other sports. Her favorite subjects were math, reading & Home Ec. Louise later attended the Iowa State teachers’ college in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Louise “loved kids” and became a teacher 👩‍🏫 and also worked at an alteration business. She said she was excited about making money at her first job..$1,500 in her first year!

She met her spouse thru teaching and they were married ❤️❤️on July 25th, 1954. Louise & her husband went to Yellowstone on their honeymoon, but slept in their car on the way back home 🏠 , due to having no money. Louise has 4 kids (1 girl and 3 boys), 9 grandchildren, and 12 great grandkids. Her family believes in God & prayers 🙏 and her attendance at church helped shape her beliefs. Louise stated that her entire family was her most significant accomplishment 🥰!

Louise said her words of wisdom are:
“Be kind and give encouraging words to make others feel good about themselves!”

Louise said these are some favorites 🤩:

Books 📚-“there’s a lot of good books”

Thursday afternoons mean it’s time for BINGO!

We give a shout out of Thanks 🙏 to Kasey for adding to the Bingo Prize cart and a thank you 🙏 to Volunteer Rick for being our “Runner”. We also thank ALL the staff & youth volunteers who helped the SOA tenants watch their bingo cards!

And, Congratulations 👏to Vivian for winning the final Blackout Bingo game!
