For Nurses week, we'd like to feature the nurses of the Ann Arbor National Black Nurses Association! These nurses address the health disparities of the African American Community (and other minorities) through ongoing education and awareness, mentoring of current and future minority healthcare professionals, and offering networking opportunities through partnerships and collaboration.

They are an asset to the community and do amazing work for those in need. Thank you so much for everything you do for community!!!

For Nurses week, CHS would like to feature Trish, Nurse Educator/Community Clinic Coordinator.

What would you tell others who are thinking about becoming nurses?
"Nurses bridge communication gaps between provider and patient, as well as support the emotional needs of patients when they are in a vulnerable state. They also view, understand, and transform health care systems as part of the provider team.
There are many opportunities to advance careers in nursing. Since my focus was Community Health, I selected an advanced degree as a Certified Health Educator Specialist. Some of the responsibility for a Certified Health Education Specialists includes:

1. Assessing the overall health needs of a specific population.
2. Developing policies, programs, and events to educate individuals and communities on health conditions.
3. Producing plans and materials for implementation and evaluation of health programs.
5. Coordinating and delivering health education and promotion interventions.
6. Identifying current, emerging health issues, and examining their underlying causes.
7. Engaging coalitions of stakeholders to address health issues and promote advocacy. "

CHS' Housing Bureau for Seniors employees care about our community and know that housing insecurity is not the only struggle for older adults and our homebound neighbors. They are always looking for ways to be of service and help our community and sister programs out. Desiree Herrick, the HBS intake coordinator, is the perfect embodiment of that desire to serve. For the past 3 years, she has volunteered at least once a month to deliver meals for Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels. Thank you for all that you do, Desiree!

In the initial months of the COVID-19 pandemic, CHS' Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels launched a free personal care items pantry with support from CHS, Food Gatherers, and Washtenaw County Office of Community & Economic Development. The pantry provided critical access to household supplies and toiletries to keep clients safe at home and ensure they could do so with dignity and care.

When asked what difference the pantry items have made in their life this year, clients shared the following:

“They make me feel safe and prepared for an emergency, ready to check for COVID.”
“They fill in for items I have to cut back on or go without.”
“It helps to not go without these items and/or sacrifice paying a bill.”

In the time that has followed since the pandemic, the need for these essential items has persisted. AAMOW is grateful that they are able to continue meeting these needs with donations from community members and a recent grant from FRIENDS Gift Shops that will also support art supplies, puzzles, activity books, and seasonal plants for AAMOW clients to brighten their days.

For National Volunteer Week, CHS would like to highlight one of their programs: Volunteer Services!

Michigan Medicine has a long-standing tradition of volunteerism. In 1941, the first formal volunteer program began with 55 townspeople and 140 students providing care to patients and augmenting the work of the “Old Main” Hospital staff. It was there that Volunteer Services first came to be.

The mission of Volunteer Services is to promote the philosophy of caring for patients and families by providing volunteers to augment the work of Michigan Medicine faculty and staff.

In addition, Volunteer Services staff nurture the educational and career aspirations and provide opportunities for student volunteers, and provide meaningful and fulfilling activities for adult community volunteers.
