Finishing up our Regional Alliance for Healthy Schools highlight, we’d like to emphasize that protecting the health of RAHS patients means ensuring the safety and reliability of the care they provide.

With support from the State of Michigan, RAHS is upgrading to medical-grade refrigerators and freezers to safely store vaccines and medications. The RAHS-Lincoln High School school-based health center is also receiving a new generator so critical vaccines remain protected even during power outages. Plus, they’re installing University of Michigan Health, Michigan Medicine TempTrak, a temperature monitoring sensors and software, across all fridges and freezers—giving them real-time tracking to ensure everything stays at the correct temperature.

These upgrades mean greater safety, reliability, and peace of mind for RAHS patients and staff.

Continuing our highlight on the Regional Alliance for Healthy Schools, they’re excited to announce that big changes are coming to the RAHS school-based health centers! Thanks to funding from the State of Michigan, they’re making important renovations and security upgrades to better serve their patients, families, and communities.

Here’s what’s happening:
* Renovations: All-new furniture and medical equipment across multiple sites
* Confidentiality upgrades: At the Carmen-Ainsworth High School, Richfield Public School Academy, Kearsley High School, and Lincoln Middle School RAHS health centers, they’re replacing partial walls with higher or full-height walls to create more private spaces for care
* Security: Installing doorbell cameras at entrances so staff can see and talk with visitors before they enter (integrated with school systems for consistency)

These improvements help RAHS create a safer, more comfortable, and confidential environment where children and adolescents can receive the care they need.

For this week, we are covering one of our programs, the Regional Alliance for Healthy Schools. They’re proud to share that the State of Michigan has provided up to $250,000 to support major upgrades at their health centers—funding renovations, new medical equipment, security enhancements, and critical infrastructure.

This investment allows RAHS to create safer, more private, and better-equipped health centers for students and families. All upgrades will be completed by September 30th of this fiscal year, helping us continue to deliver high-quality care where students learn and grow.

Thank you to the State of Michigan for helping RAHS make these improvements a reality!

This month, we’re highlighting Community Action Network (CAN) of Ann Arbor, a local nonprofit working alongside families in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. CAN provides afterschool programs, food distributions, housing support and community-building events; all grounded in long-term relationships with the neighborhoods they serve. Their spaces aren't just for programming, they’re gathering places. At the Northside Community Center, community members host everything from baby showers to support groups. The space is open to the public for rental; whether you're planning a celebration, workshop or meeting.

This spring, CAN brought community members and resource providers together for a mental health fair, completed a youth-led mural at their Brick site in Ypsilanti and supported home upgrades in the Bryant neighborhood that helped lower utility costs. Their afterschool programs are also making a measurable difference. Students who participate in CAN programming are showing stronger school engagement, attending more days each year than the district average.

With summer camp in full swing and new initiatives underway, CAN welcomes volunteers, partners and community members looking to get involved. To learn more, rent space at Northside or support their programs, visit canwashtenaw.org or email info@canwashtenaw.org.

Yesterday, we bid farewell to Cindy, Empower U Program Coordinator at the Program for Multicultural Health (PMCH), as she starts the next steps in her career and adventure!

For more than three years, Cindy coordinated and managed the Empower U program, a health promotion initiative of PMCH that is a leadership and empowerment program designed to build knowledge and skills in adolescents. Cindy helped manage programs for several community partners including the Parkridge Community Center, the Community Family Life Center (CFLC), Pathways to Success Academic Campus, and the Michigan Islamic Academy. She has taught adolescents all over the community how to improve self-sufficiency, enabling youth manage school, family, and other life demands more effectively.

If that wasn’t enough, she was also an instrumental part of expanding the CARES Program, an initiative of Empower U designed to help area youth prepare for careers and future success by learning from and interacting with industry leaders.

Cindy has been an asset to the community, and we thank her for all of her hard work and dedication to Empower U, PMCH, and CHS; and we wish you luck on this exciting next step of your journey!
