For this month, we'd like to highlight the Community Health Planning and Investment (CHPI) Team who is a small but mighty department within Community Health Services (CHS) at U-M Health. The work that CHPI is charged with planning and executing the Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA), collecting and aggregating community benefit data for all departments, and managing the CHS grants program that is the proactive investment of the CHNA priority areas (Mental Health, Access to Services, and Housing).

Community Health Services (CHS) is a department of U-M Health that seeks to lead in improving access, equity, and health outcomes in the community.

Our Year-in-Review is a glimpse in time at the important activities carried out by the program last year. From helping community members address food and housing insecurity to improving the training and care provided at Michigan Medicine, here’s how CHS does just that with our 14 different programs.

CHS's Program for Multicultural Health team is pleased to share that the 2025 Community Health Services Annual Family Supply Drive was a success!

CHS, in partnership with the Zero to Thrive Program of the Department of Psychiatry, collected personal hygiene and household essentials to support families served by two community organizational partners: IHN at Alpha House and the Family Empowerment Program (FEP) Self-Sufficiency Store at Sauk Trail Pointe.

Donations include more than 3,000 diapers, several hundred feminine hygiene products, diaper bags, baby wipes, body wash, paper towels, toilet paper, cereal, cleaning supplies, and more from 95 donors from the Michigan Medicine community and beyond. IHN Alpha House and FEP Self-Sufficiency Store staff, on behalf of the families they serve, have expressed tremendous gratitude for continued generous support.

Finishing up our highlight on Turner African American Services Council - TAASC, we’d like to spotlight one of their council members: Faye Askew-King, Chair of TAASC.

What is a highlight of being the Chair of TAASC?
“For me, the highlight of serving as chair of TAASC is the amazing members on our Council. They bring their wisdom, expertise, and knowledge of the community in helping us shape and plan our programming/events. I never worry that someone is holding back on their ideas and opinions. Everyone is happy to share their ideas/concerns even when they may be different from the majority viewpoint during the planning process. It's having these different perspectives that guide us as we develop our programming.

The result is that we always have stellar programs, speakers, panelists, etc., that bring a wealth of knowledge, information, and even practical strategies to increase and enhance the wellbeing for senior adults of color. If you’ve never attended or participated in a TAASC event, I invite you to try us. I’m sure it will be a meaningful experience.”

A HUGE congratulations to the Turner African American Services Council - TAASC for organizing the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration last weekend at Bethel AME - Ann Arbor, MI.

The event was a complete success with the program featuring insightful discussions and practical strategies for surviving today’s political climate and even a visit from Representative Debbie Dingell!

We want to give a heartfelt thank you to all of the staff, volunteers, and community members for putting on an absolutely outstanding event. You are all AMAZING!

Finishing up our coverage on Shelter Association of Washtenaw County (SAWC) they'd like to emphasize that private rooms are essential for Recuperative Care, especially for people with serious medical needs or weakened immune systems. Privacy and safety matter when healing.
While hotel rooms offer an important solution, they aren’t designed for medical recovery. Accessibility, storage for mobility equipment, and shared support spaces all make a difference in how people heal.

This is why SAWC continues to advocate for a dedicated Recuperative Care site. In the meantime, volunteers play a critical role — from providing meals to offering time and care that help guests feel supported during recovery.

Continuing our highlight of the Shelter Association of Washtenaw County (SAWC), we’d like to highlight their volunteers and the critical role they play.

Once a month, one of their dedicated volunteers prepares a home-cooked meal for guests in Recuperative Care. Unlike the shelter site at Delonis, the hotel location does not have a shared kitchen. That makes meals like this more than just food, they create comfort, connection, and a sense of home.

SAWC is incredibly grateful for volunteers who show up with generosity and care, helping ensure our guests feel supported while they recover.

For this month, we'd like to highlight the Shelter Association of Washtenaw County (SAWC)! SAWC is a non-profit organization committed to addressing the complex issue of homelessness in our community. They provide more than just shelter; they offer a comprehensive range of services to individuals in need. From emergency shelter and supportive housing to case management, employment assistance, and healthcare access, they strive to address the unique needs of each person they serve.

One of those services includes SAWC's Recuperative Care program which provides a safe place for people experiencing homelessness to heal after illness, injury, or hospitalization; when rest and medical follow-up are critical.

Their Recuperative Care program is currently hosted at the Sonesta hotel, offering private rooms where guests can recover with dignity, privacy, and space during a vulnerable time. Each guest is supported by SAWC staff and community partners as they focus on healing and stabilizing before their next steps toward housing.
