The Opioid Prescribing Engagement Network (OPEN) launched in October 2016 with support from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) Value Partnerships, and the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation (IHPI) at the University of Michigan. OPEN was founded in an effort to develop a preventive approach to the opioid epidemic in the state of Michigan by tailoring postoperative and acute care opioid prescribing.

The language we use plays a pivotal role in reducing stigma. One important strategy is using person-centered language.

Person-centered language emphasizes the individuality, dignity, and worth of a person by focusing on the person over their diagnosis or behavior.

One example of this practice in action is using the term "Person with Substance Use Disorder" instead of "substance abuser."

SUD is a chronic disease listed in the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

SUD has genetic and environmental developmental risks, just like with heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.
