MI-CARES: Environmental Health & Injustice Research Group

MI-CARES: Environmental Health & Injustice Research Group MI-CARES is a U-M study to understand the impacts of the environment on health and cancer risk.

The environmental exposures we are studying include air pollution, metals (like lead and arsenic), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), noise, and chemicals in personal care products (like shampoo). We will also assess how other factors, including where you live and work, socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity, and lifestyle, impact the relationships between the environment and health outcomes, specifically focusing on cancer risk. We will use the blood and saliva collected for this study to measure your exposure to chemicals like PFAS and heavy metals, as well as markers of stress and inflammation.

NEXT WEEK: Join us for a MI-CARES webinar with Kathryn Barry, PhD, MPH, of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Thursday September 25 at Noon. We'll be discussing "Why did the U.S. Surgeon General Issue a Warning on Alcohol and Cancer?" Please register on Zoom (https://myumi.ch/qZqxm) to join us live or you can watch it on our YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/-CARES) after the event.

The 2025 advisory from the U.S. Surgeon General indicated that alcohol is a key risk factor for several types of cancer. Join our upcoming webinar to learn about the important connection between alcohol use and cancer risk. Dr. Barry will provide an overview of the current knowledge about alcohol and cancer and also share new research findings on lifetime alcohol intake and its relationship to colorectal polyps and colorectal cancer.

Dr. Kathryn Barry is an Assistant Professor and cancer epidemiologist at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center. Her research aims to investigate environmental and occupational risk factors for cancer, the interplay of genes and the environment in the chance of developing cancer, and biomarkers related to cancer. Dr. Barry has also investigated lifestyle risk factors for colorectal cancer and colorectal polyps, which are benign growths in the colon or re**um that can lead to cancer.
