What Group Practice Websites Won’t Tell You- Beth Pearson, PhD
There have never been more opportunities for therapists looking to join a group practice. There was an absolute explosion during the Covid and post-COVID era- with the number of mental health clinics expanding 8-9% annually from 2020 to 2025. This is great for clients who have more access to care and it *can be* great for therapists because it means they have more options to choose from.
I’ve noticed how tricky it can be for therapists who are job searching to be able to assess what a group practice is truly like. Websites and Job Ads can show some of the story but there are often really important differences in groups’ cultures that need to be investigated.
If I was a therapist searching for the right-fit group practice for me- during the interview process I’d be asking questions like:
--What is the average retention of therapists? Why do therapists leave the practice?
What is your philosophy on growth?
-How do you balance trainees with experienced clinicians?
-Do you trust the group practice owner?
-Do therapists feel emotionally safe and deeply respected?
-How collaborative are policies and decisions?
These questions reveal whether a practice is built for therapists — or just built on them.
