Your support has empowered me to pursue meaningful internships and conduct research centered on maternal and child health initiatives, including addressing gaps in care for families in Ypsilanti. Your investment is shaping students like me into leaders committed to building a healthier, more sustainable future.”

check-in with Erica Jansen, Assistant Professor of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Michigan School of Public Health: if you’re hoping a “sleep hack” (Sleepy Girl Mocktail, melatonin, magnesium, tart cherry juice, chamomile tea) will fix everything overnight… it probably won’t.

A few evidence-based shifts that can actually move the needle:

🍎 Healthy eating across the day (fruits/veggies, whole grains, lean proteins—especially fish—and dairy) to get sleep-supporting nutrients like magnesium, melatonin, tryptophan, and antioxidants

☕ Caffeine timing (it can stick around ~6 hours and still reduce sleep quality—even if you fall asleep fast). Energy drinks are a common culprit for students.

🍷 Alcohol earlier, if at all—it can make you sleepy at first but disrupt sleep quality, so happy hour beats late-night drinks for sleep.

🕘 Meal timing & regularity—late dinners and inconsistent schedules (including post-dinner snacks) can affect sleep.

NEW PODCAST: From the push-and-pull factors driving immigration to the ripple effects of deportation, William Lopez, Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, draws on research and stories from his books "Separated" and "Raiding the Heartland" to examine the trauma, community disruption, and lasting harm to children and families—including right here in Michigan.

Together with Sharon Kardia, Senior Associate Dean for Education at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, they dig into enforcement strategy, differences between urban and rural response, and how policy and politics shape the American immigration story. Plus: why the health and well-being of immigrant communities is a public health issue for all of us—and how everyday people can take action.
