“SNAP is the foundation of economic support for a lot of food retailers, like those smaller places in rural areas and the corner store in our cities. So this has far-reaching impacts beyond just the people who get SNAP," explains Kate Bauer, associate professor of nutritional sciences to CBS News

"Now we'll have to prioritize which bills we can pay and which can wait," said one mother of two about a looming freeze in food aid.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is "the most effective strategy we have to reduce poverty for children and families," and a pause in benefits will have far-reaching effects, says Kate Bauer, associate professor of nutritional sciences at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Jennifer Garner, assistant professor of nutritional sciences, also at the School of Public Health, discusses how SNAP is an "economic infusion." via Detroit Free Press: https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2025/10/27/snap-benefits-federal-government-shutdown-michigan-food-banks/86876405007/

1 out of every 5 children in the US experiences food insecurity. Kate Bauer, associate professor of Nutritional Sciences at Michigan Public Health, explores obstacles that exist in our food assistance systems and highlights the critical importance of individualized support for families. She explains how her research aims to remove barriers and reduce stigma that contributes to childhood hunger; actually listening to families when they give us practical solutions.

“These community-driven approaches can transform children's health, but only if research funding continues. This isn't just research—it's about creating solutions based on evidence, not assumptions."

"This is going to equal, in the long run, I really think, a lot more than just one month of lost SNAP benefits. It's going to sort of destabilize families' whole incomes, explained Michigan Public Health Associate Professor of Nutritional Sciences, Kate Bauer, to Michigan Public. “It's going to get people into a hole, into a hole that is going to be harder and harder to climb out of, right? You put more on your credit card, the interest rates and the costs accumulate.”

Michigan is pausing November food assistance payments until further notice, due to the federal government shutdown.

"Without resources, rural hospitals will close, and many communities will lose their primary source of care. Without workforce investment, these providers will struggle to meet the needs of their communities," writes Michael Shepherd, Assistant Professor of Health Management and Policy at the University of Michigan School of Public Health in an op-ed on Bridge Michigan

Drew Ebner is earning her bachelor’s degree from University of Michigan School of Public Health with plans to attend medical school after graduation. Her path to pursue medicine began as she watched her grandmother battle breast cancer. Drew envisioned a future where she could provide the same compassionate, expert care that guided her family through this most challenging time. Drew’s work — whether in the lab, at the bedside, or in the community — reflects her broader vision for the future of healthcare. As Drew writes, “I aspire to be a physician who sees beyond symptoms and diagnoses and understands the connection between physical health and emotional resilience. Success will be measured by the empowerment I inspire in my future patients.” CEW+ honors Drew’s leadership toward holistic healthcare and names her an Irma M. Wyman Scholar.

WATCH: One pioneering study provides decades worth of data on menopause.

"If you open an endocrinology textbook and look at what hormone patterns look like across the menopause transition, that is data from SWAN,” said Michigan Public Health researcher, Carrie Karvonen-Gutierrez.

Gutierrez is the director of the University of Michigan School of Public Health‘s Center for Lifecourse Epidemiology and Aging Research (CLEAR), and the principal investigator of SWAN’s clinical research site there – one of seven such sites throughout the country.

“Already we know that folks are often apprehensive to use resources like and due to stigma, due to shame, due to the bureaucracy involved,” University of Michigan School of Public Health's Jennifer Garner told Bridge Michigan.

The uncertainty of the moment and the tenor of the national conversation can create a lot of fear, Garner explained.

Michigan health officials: SNAP food assistance benefits for 1.4 million will "temporarily pause" in November if federal government shutdown continues. Program for mothers with infant children also at risk.

"We are living in a pivotal moment that is reshaping the foundation of public health," writes a group of department chairs of social and behavioral health programs from universities and colleges around the country in the American Journal of Public Health.

Darrell Hudson, chair of the department of Health Behavior & Healthy Equity at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, is a co-author, and comments on the need to stand up for the core principles of social and behavioral sciences.
