Integrative Medicine

Integrative medicine is an approach to care that puts the patient at the center and addresses the full range of physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual, and environmental influences that affect a person's health. Employing a personalized strategy that considers the patient's unique conditions, needs and circumstances. Integrative medicine uses the most appropriate interventions from an array of scientific disciplines to heal illness and disease and help people regain and maintain optimal health. Healthcare is seen as a partnership between patient and practitioner, where together they seek to find the best therapeutic approaches to each patient's condition. A broad range of treatment options may be considered, including herbal therapies, acupuncture, manual therapy (massage, chiropractic), homeopathy and energy work (Reiki, polarity, craniosacral therapy), and treatment choices are based on scientific evidence as well as practitioner experience and patient preference. Naturopathic Medicine

Licensed naturopathic doctors are general practitioners specializing in natural medicine. They attend a 4 year post-graduate medical school and they receive both basic science and clinical education. Their training is based in Western biomedical science and integrates natural modalities such as botanical medicine, nutrition and homeopathy. Naturopathic doctors specialize in evidence-based complementary and alternative medicine, bridging conventional and holistic medicine. Naturopathic medicine is beneficial for many health conditions, including, but not limited to:

Adrenal fatigue, allergies, stress and mental/emotional conditions. Hormone abnormalities (thyroid disease, diabetes, menopausal or menstrual symptoms)
GI disorders (Inflammatory bowel disease, Irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhea, gasroblems)
Cardiovascular disease
Immune disorders (autoimmune disease, cancer, frequent colds or flu)
General wellness and disease prevention

Acupuncture

The world's oldest continuously practiced medicine, acupuncture was first developed in China over 4,000 years ago. The practice has been significantly refined over the centuries, but retains its fundamental philosophical basis. Today, over two billion people worldwide use acupuncture for primary healthcare or to complement Western medical treatment. Acupuncture can be used to treat many different kinds of health issues. While it's effectiveness in alleviating pain is well-known and widely documented by sources as diverse as the World Health Organization and the National Institutes of Health, of equal significance is the power of acupuncture to address chronic conditions, including but not limited to:

headaches
sleep disturbances
menstrual, fertility, and other gynecological issues
chronic fatigue, stress related disorders, depression and anxiety
digestive disorders and bowel problems
asthma, allergies and sinus issues
muscle pain and spasm, joint pain, and sciatica
lowered immunity and cancer and chemotherapy support

Low Level Laser Therapy

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is the application of red and near infrared light over injuries or lesions to improve wound and soft tissue healing, reduce inflammation and give relief to both acute and chronic pain. The effects of LLLT are photochemical (like photosynthesis in plants) . When the correct intensity and treatment times are used, red and near infrared light reduces oxidative stress and increases ATP (energy) production. This improves cell metabolism and reduces inflammation. LLLT is often used for soft tissue injuries, joint conditions, neuropathic pain, non-healing leg and pressure ulcers. There is a great deal of research literature which has confirmed its beneficial effects. A meta-analysis of 16 randomized controlled trials of LLLT for neck pain published in The Lancet indicated it is beneficial for reducing pain immediately in acute injury and treatment for chronic pain is effective up to 22 weeks after treatment.

Second Measles case in Michigan.
Walk in vaccines at the health department below.

If you were born before 1957 it is highly likely that you had measles as a child and have lifelong immunity.

If you were born after 1957 and have documentation of two measles vaccines ever, you are good.

If you are unsure, or know you had one vaccine, consider a booster.

See picture below for accurate guidance.

Press release from the health department:

Earlier this week, Kent County confirmed a second case of measles in Michigan. People may have been exposed to measles at a few public locations, including the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport and the Gerald R. Ford International Airport. See details and what to do if you were in these places at the identified times.

Here's a reminder that you can walk in to the Health Department (555 Towner in Ypsi) to get an MMR vaccine or check your vaccine record! Walk-in hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30am to 3:30pm and on Fridays from 8:00am to 3:00pm.

2 doses of the MMR vaccine is about 97% effective at preventing measles (1 dose is about 93%

From Mandy Dakroub MD.

So many factors contribute to us all being constipated. In children, they learn to delay bowel movements, they don’t want to p**p at school, and the colon quickly stretches out to become a storage location. This stretched out colon can’t contract well. It takes 3 months of keeping the colon empty for a child to get the stretched out muscles to clamp back down and contract effectively. For adults with a stretched out, “tortuous colon,” it can take 2 years of keeping the colon empty to regain the contractility. Anyone who has carried a pregnancy knows how long it takes for that tissue to restore: sometimes never! For those of us with stretchy tissues, even harder to restore function. Don’t be afraid to do what needs to be done with enemas, osmotic agents, and motility agents to eliminate well.

By Steve Hodges, M.D.Parents often ask me how long children with chronic constipation can safely use stimulant laxatives such as senna (Ex-Lax). Just the other day, a Canadian mom whose child struggles with nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting) emailed: “I am getting some pushback from my GI over the lo...

From Mandy

This technology is similar to what they use to break up kidney stones but in this case, it is toned down to work on fascia. In hypermobility, strength and proprioception along with bracing are key, but also, the fascia gets thick and rigid. Dry needling, foam rolling, and manual techniques are really helpful for pain, and this is another cool option.

Tried it today. Normal tissue does not feel the signal as much and then damaged tissue will feel more, so that can be diagnostic as far as where to work on things. I have pain in my right suboccipital area that I recently learned was coming from my subscapularis, rhomboid and lower traps. I had her check those areas so I could see the difference with normal tissue and injured tissue. My PM&R person figured this out already, after working with me for 6 years. But this could be a shortcut. She charges $90 for the first session, where you map out the areas of concern. You also get a very light treatment, as it is easy to over do things with fascial injuries, especially with those that are hypermobile. You adjust the strength of treatment based on response.

At Stay Well Sports, we understand the impact that pain and limitation can have on your life, and we are dedicated to helping you overcome these challenges.
