We had a great time with our Oktoberfest celebrations today! We went out for a German-style lunch at Metzger's, then came back and learned about Germany and the Oktoberfest traditions from Ellie, a resident from Germany. We finished the afternoon with an Oktoberfest party led by the Misty Blues Band who played Polka and German classics. It was wonderful to learn about the culture and traditions being celebrated during Oktoberfest! Thanks for sharing with us, Ellie! Prost!

Winner winner chicken dinner!

Our Casino Royale Social Series event was a full house. With retro-Vegas vibes, games galore and special prizes, everyone was a winner!

We started our Casino with Poker, Blackjack, a Horse Race, and a Human Slot Machine. Afterwards, the residents were able to enter into the Penny Auction to win some prizes with all their earnings. One resident, Mary, noted after the program, "I didn't even realize it was the dining room! It was like the whole dining room had transformed into a Casino. It really was amazing and magical!"

Jody, our Resident Services Coordinator, gave us a fabulous presentation today about her recent trip to Alaska! It brought back lots of fond memories that the residents had of travelling there, as they heard the stories, saw pictures, and looked at memorabilia she brought back. Thank you, Jody!

We have a fun fact about our Executive Director, McKenna - she plays Roller Derby. This weekend, we got the opportunity to see her in action after all the stories! Her team gave the residents a special demonstration to explain what to expect during the bout. They all loved seeing her in a way that is very different than how they see her at Atria! Way to go, McKenna!

Patriot Day is a traumatic day for a lot of people, but today we especially thought of the firefighters. On September 11, 2001, many lives were lost and lots of firefighters fought to save people in the burning towers. Our residents wanted to give back to the firefighters in our area and let them know that we support them every day, but especially on this day. Thank you to all First Responders and those who jumped in to help, whether on 9/11, or any day of trauma. We are fortunate to have such a supportive community and on days like this, we remember those we lost and love those who are still with us.

Last week, we had the wonderful opportunity of participating in a full-circle program. We have a special connection with the company, HouseN2Home, and the residents wanted to collaborate with them for a program. The week before the facility tour, we designed and potted plants to donate to them. Then during the visit, we were able to give them the plants and see all that they do there. HouseN2Home helps to furnish homes for people after experiencing homelessness. They provide a meal for the family, furnish and decorate the home, and provide food in their cabinets. They have helped over 1,500 families in Ann Arbor since they opened and they have a team of over 400 volunteers to help make it all possible. While seeing all they do there and all the furnishings they provide, our residents were extremely impressed. One mentioned, "It's just incredible; all they work for the community is amazing. They work hard to give back to the community and every person we passed was smiling and ready to help. It's wonderful to see something like this happening in our back yard. It makes us proud to live in Ann Arbor!"
What a wonderful full-circle moment.

Happy Football Season! 🏈
We played an adapted football game today where the residents rolled the dice that would tell them how far they would advance or lose on the field. We had lots of interceptions and turnovers, but in the end, "The Lions" won against "The Dinosaurs!" It was a great way to start football season and get ready to cheer on our home team, The Lions! Go Lions!

"She was dunked about 52 times, and she still has a big smile on her face!" Carol noted while watching McKenna, our Executive Director, in the Dunk Tank. This quote described yesterday perfectly as we enjoyed a Carnival in the afternoon. We had McKenna get dunked in the Dunk Tank, got ice cream from the Nostalgic Ice Cream truck, had cotton candy, and played lots of carnival games. Our staff participated in the Carnival and won some great prizes to show our appreciation for them. Thank you to the various Health companies (Legacy Therapy, Corso Care, Heartland Hospice, BrightOn Hospice, and Arbor Hospice) for coming out to make yesterday such a success; we greatly appreciate your support for our residents and staff!

One of our new residents, Bonnie, is very skilled in playing the piano! The other day, we got a chance to hear her play and it brought some people to tears and brought curiosity and inspiration to others.
One of our staff said afterward, "It was just amazing to hear her. She is so talented! I actually used to play piano and stopped a couple of years ago. Hearing Bonnie play the piano moves me to tears and has inspired me to get back into playing. It really astounds me how a skill like this can last a lifetime! She has been playing since she was five years old and she can still play incredibly. Bonnie is an inspiration to me!"
