Dr. Katy Gold spoke with Michigan Public about her work at the Luke Clinic in Detroit. She explains the difficulties and frustration that women face when trying to establish Medicaid while pregnant.

In the article she noted, “I’m so frustrated. I feel like the people who are getting hurt are the babies that are getting delivered,” she said. “There's very good data that the better prenatal care you get during pregnancy, getting early care, identifying risk factors, getting treated, improves outcomes.”

The Luke Clinic is a free clinic that provides prenatal, postpartum, and infant care. Dr. Gold serves as the clinic's medical director.

How one free clinic in southwest Detroit is helping uninsured pregnant women in Michigan access the healthcare they need.

A large group of family medicine faculty participated in last week’s Leadership Summit for Advancing Women in Academic Medicine and Healthcare.

This annual summit fosters leadership development through skill-based learning, meaningful connections with peers across academic medicine and healthcare, and expert insights on leading effectively in today’s complex environment.

Family medicine was exceptionally well represented at this important event, underscoring our development of leaders across all missions of the Department who will shape the future of healthcare and ensure that primary care perspectives are meaningfully included in leadership conversations and decision-making.

“My advice to prospective medical students is simple: look for the people who make you feel less alone in asking hard questions. Ask yourself where you can take action, even in small ways. Medical school will expose you to the weight of the world, but it will also introduce you to people who refuse to accept injustice as inevitable.”

For Navya Kalia, that sense of community has shaped her clinical training and her understanding of what it means to care for patients and for each other. Read more about her experience in the Patients and Population Branch: https://michmed.org/qNeBr
