In honor of Women's History Month, we celebrate the remarkable contributions of women in anesthesia.

In the late 19th century, Drs. Isabella Herb and Mary Botsford emerged as the first women physicians dedicated to anesthesia, paving the way for future generations.

Early 20th-century pioneers like Dr. Frances Haines not only advanced clinical practices but also held leadership roles, serving as presidents of anesthesia organizations and contributing significantly to the field's development.

Today, women continue to shape anesthesiology, leading research, education, and clinical advancements, ensuring patient safety and enhancing perioperative care.

We honor these extraordinary women and their enduring impact on the field of anesthesia. 🌷

As February is coming to a close, we’re taking a moment to reflect on what matters most — patient safety, education, and heart-healthy habits that support better outcomes before and after procedures.

Whether you’ve been preparing for surgery, focusing on wellness, or simply learning more about your health this month, every step toward better care makes a difference.

Our team at A4 is proud to support patients and healthcare partners every day — not just this month, but all year long.

If you start to feel under the weather before your procedure, even if it’s “just a cold”, it’s important to tell your anesthesia and surgical team right away. Symptoms like coughing, fever, congestion, sore throat, or shortness of breath can affect how your body responds to anesthesia and may increase certain risks during surgery.

Your care team’s priority is always your safety. In some cases, your procedure may continue as planned with extra precautions. In others, it may be safer to reschedule until you’re feeling better. Either way, clear communication helps your providers make the best decision for you.

Don’t worry about “bothering” your team — we want to know so we can keep you safe and comfortable every step of the way!

You’ve probably heard the rule: no food or drink before surgery. But why is it so important?

Fasting helps reduce the risk of stomach contents entering the lungs while you’re under anesthesia, a rare but serious complication called aspiration. Following your pre-op instructions helps your anesthesia team keep your airway safe and your procedure running smoothly.

Always follow the specific fasting/food instructions provided by your care team — every procedure and patient is different.

Healthy habits support not only everyday wellness, but also safer anesthesia experiences and smoother recovery after procedures. Taking steps to care for your cardiovascular health can help your body handle stress, heal efficiently, and maintain stability during surgery.

Heart-healthy habits include:
🫀 Regular physical activity
🫀 Balanced, nutrient-rich meals
🫀 Managing stress levels
🫀 Staying hydrated and well-rested
🫀 Keeping up with routine medical checkups

Even small changes can make a meaningful difference over time. We believe that strong heart health is an important part of overall surgical safety and long-term wellness.

February is Heart Health Month ❤️

Your heart plays a major role in how your body responds to anesthesia and surgery. Before every procedure, your anesthesia team carefully reviews your cardiac history, medications, blood pressure, and overall cardiovascular health to help create a personalized anesthesia plan focused on safety and comfort.

Conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, or irregular heart rhythms don’t automatically prevent surgery, but they do require thoughtful planning and monitoring. During procedures, anesthesia providers continuously track heart rate, rhythm, oxygen levels, and circulation to help maintain stability every step of the way.

Preparing for Surgery Starts Before the OR!

Before Surgery Tips:
✅ Share all medications and supplements with your anesthesia team
✅ Follow fasting instructions carefully—your safety depends on it
✅ Ask questions about what to expect—no question is too small
✅ Plan for recovery: arrange rides, meals, and rest at home

At A4 Anesthesia, we’re here to guide you every step of the way. Being prepared helps you feel confident, safe, and ready for a successful procedure.
