Name and Definition
The Michigan Alternative Medicine Club may be alternatively called “MAMC” . "Students" refers to all students enrolled at UM or other degree-granting institutions and high schools. A “visitor” is an individual who has attended no more than two MAMC events. “The Community” refers to non-members. Purpose
MAMC shall focus on educating members of the benefits, practice, and techniq
ues of alternative medicine. It is for those who believe that “health” is neither the synonym of “cure” nor the antonym of “disease”, but is better defined as “maintaining lifelong wellness with healing practices.” MAMC shall facilitate lectures, discussions, and workshops on the UM campus. Occasional field trips may be planned to visit local practitioners or to volunteer in the Community. Members will be able to acquire skills for their careers, apply health principles in their daily lives, and become knowledgeable patients. Article III. Membership
Membership shall be open to everyone, regardless of sex, race, ethnic background, religion, financial standing or sexual orientation. Membership shall be established and continued by paying annual Membership dues and abiding by MAMC Constitution and By-Laws. Members in good standing shall be entitled to attend all events organized by MAMC and shall be entitled to vote in elections and General Meetings. Members are eligible to join the Events Committee.....A. Student Members. Students currently enrolled in an accredited college, university, or high school. ....B. Non-Student Members. Non-students, UM faculty and staff, or alumni.....C. Persons from the Community who have not purchased a membership and have attended no more than two MAMC events.....D. Executive Officers. Members who have volunteered to serve on the Executive Board and have been elected by MAMC to represent all members. ....E. Event Planners. Student Members, Non-Student Members, or Executive Officers who have volunteered to serve in the Events Committee. Article IV. Executive Board. MAMC shall be governed by an Executive Board or “Board” consisting of elected Officers. Officers shall be elected for one-year terms and may be reelected indefinitely. Two-thirds of the Board must be present at all General Meetings. Board Meeting are closed to other members, but Voting regarding Constitutional Amendments or By-laws, two-thirds of Officers must be present to vote. The Board shall....A. Execute the general goals of MAMC;....B. Oversee the functioning of the Events Committee;....B. Collect membership dues;....C. Keep records of MAMC’s financial activities and maintain its funds at an account with the Student Organization Accounts Service (SOAS);....D. Register MAMC with the Michigan Student Assembly every year; and....E. Enforce the By-laws and Constitution of MAMC. Article V. Officers. The Board shall consist of five persons. A special election shall be scheduled in case a vacancy occurs. The responsibilities of each Officer are as follows:....A. President. The President shall be responsible for calling and presiding over Board and General Meetings, setting meeting agendas, calling votes on club proposals when appropriate, ensuring that MAMC Membership is kept fully apprised in writing of all Board decisions, and overseeing all other Board functions. The President shall also serve as the official spokesperson for MAMC, except in instances where the Board has chosen another spokesperson. The President must have one year of experience as a Board Member prior to running for office.....B. Vice President. The Vice President shall preside in the President’s absence and oversee the functioning of the Events Committee.....C. Treasurer. The Treasurer shall be responsible for all of MAMC financial accounting and budgeting, including keeping track of MAMC income and expenses and making available regular financial summaries to the Membership.....D. Secretary. The Secretary shall take minutes at all Board Meetings and make the minutes available to the Membership and public, update contact information for Board Members, announce upcoming Meetings, and maintain various MAMC documents.....E. External Relations Officer. The External Relations Officer shall keep track of Membership statistics and promote student participation in MAMC by overseeing the publicity efforts and providing a channel for student feedback. Article VI. Events Committee
All dedicated Members and Officers are encouraged to become Event Planners at anytime. They shall plan lectures, discussions, workshops, field trips, and community outreaches for MAMC. The Events Committee shall present plans to the Executive Board and submit proposals for financing events if necessary. The Events Committee may conduct meetings anytime and anywhere, with or without all Event Planners attending, and is not required to document meetings. Article VII. General Meetings. General Meetings shall be held once every Fall and Winter semester, and additionally, as needed. The purpose of these meetings is to form an Events Committee, conduct Board elections, hold open votes regarding Constitutional Amendments and By-laws, and to discuss concerns and ideas. Members shall be notified of General Meetings at least one week in advance. At least three weeks notice will be given for General Meetings that involve Constitutional Amendments or elections. Board nominations may be submitted by any member to the President. The day of the election and distribution of the ballots and notifications shall be made so as to encourage the fullest participation. Article VIII. Referendum and Recall. Executive Officers may only be removed from the Board by a two-thirds vote of members present during a General Membership Meeting. Article IX. Affiliation and Other Associations. MAMC may associate with local, state, national, international, or commercial organizations if the Board determines that the association will benefit MAMC. Such associations shall be reviewed and renewed every September. MAMC shall maintain recognition by the Michigan Student Assembly, as a Volunteer Student Organization and shall enjoy certain privileges as a result of this recognition. Article X. Amendments. Amendments to this Constitution shall be proposed and voted upon at General Meetings. A two-thirds majority of attendees is required in order to adopt any Amendment.
