Home and Community Recreation Therapy

Home and Community Recreation Therapy Outcome-focused therapy that gets people off the sidelines and back into life!

Diane Wagner-Heffner, MA, CTRS, CBIS started Home & Community Recreation Therapy in 2006. Home & Community Recreation Therapy (HCRT) provides therapy in the client’s home & community. Our services not only improve functional levels but assist clients with overall health & happiness doing the things they enjoy. Research shows that an active, satisfying lifestyle leads to greater health and happiness—and that’s especially true for people with disabilities. HCRT incorporates our clients’ interests, support network, and pre-injury lifestyles to better engage them in therapy and achieve functional improvements. We provide the tools needed for ongoing success, working toward a lifestyle that is physically active, cognitively engaged, emotionally satisfying, and socially involved. Interventions and specializations include:
· Fitness programs
· Aquatics therapy
· Community safety evaluation
· Family and aide training
· Volunteer placement
· Computer and/or PDA research and training
· Education and integration into appropriate community institutions
· Stress management and relaxation
· Adaptive leisure skills training including horticulture, music, sports, art and games.

*Therapy Thursday* Discover the power of adapted yoga with your Recreational Therapist & feel the benefits. Adapted Yoga is an evidence-based practice & many of our RTs love implementing adapted yoga because there are so many ways to provide person-centered modifications.

🧘‍♀️ Poses to Start With 🧘‍♀️
- Seated Mountain Pose is perfect for grounding & posture awareness while seated in a chair
- Gentle Neck Rolls can release tension & improve range of motion
- Seated Cat-Cow will mobilize the spine with gentle forward & backward movements
- Arm Raises help stretch shoulders & improve upper body mobility
- Seated Forward Fold can calm the nervous system with a gentle stretch

⭐ Supplies Needed: Yoga mats or non-slip surfaces (optional for seated practice), a sturdy chair with no arms for modifications as needed, Yoga blocks or books for support, blankets or cushions for comfort, & your choice of calming music is recommended.

⭐ Remember: Adapted yoga meets people exactly where they are. Every pose can be modified, and there's no "perfect" way to practice. The goal is connection, not perfection!

Please forgive us for being a little late on the *Therapy Thursday* post but this one is worth the wait!

Ahead of the Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games in February, our Thursday peer group learned about and participated in the sport of Curling at the Detroit Curling Club in Ferndale yesterday!

If youve ever wanted to learn the basics and give it a try yourself, they are hosting a FREE adapted clinic this Sunday 1/18 at 10a. More information can be found on their website and page! They also offer lessons, leagues, & group outings!

Thank you for having us!

This week’s focus: Crafting Recreational Therapy Goals That Matter

Goals - a word we hear often as we enter a fresh, new year. At the heart of effective recreational therapy is the art of goal-setting that truly reflects each client's unique needs, abilities, and personal goals. Our certified therapy team brings specialized expertise to this process, developing both short-term and long-term goals that are not only measurable but personal. We understand that meaningful progress looks different for everyone. Whether it's regaining independence in a favorite hobby, building social connections, or achieving new milestones in physical or cognitive function, each goal we create is tailored to the individual.

What sets our approach apart is our commitment to collaboration. Whenever appropriate, we actively involve clients, their family, and members of their interdisciplinary team in the goal-writing process, honoring their preferences as essential components of their care plan. This partnership empowers clients to take ownership of their therapeutic journey! By combining clinical expertise with person-centered care, our team creates roadmaps for success for each client.

Pictured here is one of our clients, Sharika, who has chosen to develop fitness goals with her therapist for the new year! She often says “if it doesn’t challenge me, it’s not for me!”

Our therapist Bre and her client had a holly jolly time at Canterbury Crossroads Village seeing all the beautiful light displays and riding the Huckleberry train! It was her clients’ first train ride and he had a blast. The holidays are a great opportunity for our therapists to plan unique outings for our clients. We are so thankful for each and every one of them.

Our therapist Shanon and her client attend the “Happy Hooker” crochet group on Wednesdays and they have a blast! Crocheting is typically viewed as an “extraindividual” activity, meaning it is done alone without involving others. However, a group like this one allows this activity to become a social event! What an awesome idea and a great intervention.

Our client Brian is so generous and empathetic, always thinking of others and how he can help. He used his own money to purchase 80 sleeping bags to pass out to those in need. Him and his therapist Cayleigh worked with Detroit Rescue Mission to pass them out this week in Detroit. A perfect session idea for this time of year ❤️❄️

Pam and her therapist, Jessica, attend a chair Zumba class regularly at the Friendship Center (Westland Senior Center). This class allows Pam to engage in adaptive fitness, while working on strength, endurance, and bilateral coordination in a supportive environment with others. Pam loves this class and encourages others to give it a try!
