Parents and guardians of kids under 5! πŸ“£ Are you eligible for the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program?

March is National Nutrition Month - it's the perfect time to look into WIC. WIC provides free food, nutrition and health education, breastfeeding support, and more. Anyone who meets income guidelines and is pregnant or caring for a child under 5 is welcome at WIC.

β€œWIC improves health for babies, children, and parents while helping families save money,” says Gayathri Akella, MS, RD, IBCLC, WIC Supervisor.

β€œParticipating in WIC throughout pregnancy and until a child is five years old can save a family over $5,000! This frees up money for other essential costs like diapers, childcare, and housing.”

"Many families tell us that WIC is the reason they have enough food at home,” says Erika Chanderraj, MPH, RDN, LCE, WIC Service Coordinator.

β€œWith increasing food prices, our program continues to support families with healthy food, including fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and different protein sources."

Call our WIC team at 734-544-6800 or email wic@washtenaw.org to see if you're eligible. Get more details using the link in the comments.

It's super cold this week. πŸ₯Ά Do you know how to prevent frostbite and hypothermia?

βœ… Limit your time outside when it's very cold. If you have to venture out, dress in layers and wear hats, gloves, and waterproof boots. Make sure to cover up your fingers, ears, chin, cheeks, nose, and toes.

βœ… Stay dry (wet clothing can speed up heat loss).

βœ… Drink warm fluids and avoid alcohol, which can lower your body temperature.

Make sure you know the signs:

❄️ Frostbite: Numbness, white or grayish skin, or skin that feels waxy or firm.

❄️ Hypothermia: Shivering, confusion, slurred speech, and drowsiness.

If you suspect frostbite or hypothermia, get medical help immediately. Get more cold weather safety info using the link in the comments.
