The future of treatment for motor and speech disabilities may come in the form of a brain-computer interface (BCI), a small chip that takes signals from the brain and uses them to restore speech or movement.

Our neurosurgery team, led by Dr. Matthew Willsey, is at the cutting edge of this technology. In June 2025, Willsey and Dr. Oren Sagher led the first in-human recording from a new, wireless BCI.

Recently, University of Michigan Health was among the first in the nation to establish a Brain-Computer Interface Clinic, where people with motor and speech disabilities will be evaluated for available interventions and learn about current and future BCI clinical trials.
