Meet Logan one of our Little Victors from our 2025 calendar. “Logan was diagnosed at 21 weeks gestation with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. This rare genetic condition has created some challenges for Logan, including a truncus arteriosus type 2, a congenital heart defect. He underwent major heart repair at 3-days-old and a conduit replacement at 2.5 years old. Logan's conditions are managed by 11 specialties across Mott, and he is thriving with the care he's received.” Hail, Logan!

In the 1980s, Michigan Medicine’s pediatric emergency care was like a walk-in clinic tucked in a corner of the adult emergency department. Today, they have their own space at Mott.

From the NICU to the College World Series

At just 3 days old, Mason underwent life-saving surgery for a congenital heart condition.

And two months later — at only 8 weeks old— he made the trip with his family to the 2025 Men’s College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, becoming one of the youngest fans in the stands.

The partnership between UM Health-West and U-M Health C.S. Mott Children's Hospital allowed for smooth planning between Mason’s care teams.

Hail, Mason! 💛 💙

Meet CJ one of our Little Victors from our 2025 calendar. “CJ was born in November 2023 at another hospital and then rushed the next day to Mott due to a heart condition. Truncus arteriosus and chromosome 22 deletion were discovered, and he had open-heart surgery at six days old. Our first stay was 42 days, and we were home for 18 days when he had complications over New Years Eve weekend. He was rushed back to Mott New Years Day and had a bowel obstruction and had emergency surgery. He had an ostomy bag for months. He also got bacterial pneumonia that almost killed him. He was intubated and reintubated multiple times both stays. He then had breathing problems, and we found out he had tracheomalacia and is now ventilator dependent and had the ostomy reversed. We finally were discharged months later and he is home and thriving!! We are weaning his daytime support now. He is so smart and thriving.” Hail, CJ!

Meet Reagan one of our Little Victors from our 2025 calendar. “While cheering during a football game in August of 2023, Reagan abruptly sat down and complained of a headache where she then lost consciousness. Reagan was rushed by ambulance to University of Michigan Health C.S. Mott Children's Hospital. When she got there, Reagan was quickly evaluated in the emergency department and diagnosed with an AVM, a brain arteriovenous malformation. Reagan was placed into emergency surgery with the Mott neurosurgery team. The surgery was successful, but Reagan would need months of physical rehabilitation to become independent again. Reagan stayed in the Mott pediatric intensive care unit for 22 days before being moved to a rehabilitation floor for another 48 days where she had to relearn motor skills from scratch. When Reagan first arrived at the rehabilitation center, she was having trouble speaking, walking, swallowing and taking care of herself. However, with her amazing determination along with the support and guidance of her therapy team, doctors, family and friends, Reagan was able to not only start sixth grade this year, but she just finished her cheer season - Go Mustangs!” Hail, Reagan!

For families facing Dravet syndrome — a severe form of epilepsy beginning in infancy — treatment options are limited and often come with serious side effects. One in five children with Dravet tragically die from Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy.

Researchers at Michigan Medicine have joined a global clinical trial aiming to find new answers for these children. Mott is among hospitals across the country testing a new therapy that targets the genetic cause of Dravet syndrome.

“It’s not just about managing symptoms,” says Dr. Julie Ziobro, pediatric neurologist at Mott. “With this trial, we’re exploring a treatment that could change the course of the disease itself.”

Ziobro shares more about Dravet syndrome and the new research:

Michigan Medicine researchers talk about changing the disease course of Dravet syndrome and families caring for the condition.

Diffuse midline gliomas are aggressive tumors that begin in the brain or spinal cord.

For the first time, the FDA has approved a treatment for this disease. The drug ONC201 will bring new hope for patients with DMG.

Carl Koschmann, a U-M pediatric oncologist, answers questions about ONC201, the U-M research that led to the FDA approval and what this means for patients. Learn more:

Diffuse midline gliomas are aggressive tumors that begin in the brain or spinal cord. It is universally fatal, and patients typically live for nine to 15 months after diagnosis. The FDA has approved ONC201 (dordaviprone) to treat recurrent H3K27M-mutant diffuse glioma. Meet Lyra, Julian and Francis, Little Victors from our 2025 calendar. “We knew to have our oldest, Lyra, checked for cataracts when she was born, but she didn’t have any at delivery and we assumed we didn’t have to worry about it. When she was around seven months old, we started to notice behavior changes and went to appointment after appointment until we finally noticed her pupils were silver. Our pediatrician diagnosed her with cataracts and within a week we were seeing Dr. Gappy at the Kellogg Eye Center, and the following week she had her first surgery. She is now absolutely thriving in first grade with no vision concerns! Lyra also has two younger brothers, Julian who is three years old, and Francis who is 10 months old, who had their cataracts found much earlier. Dr. Gappy has treated all three of the kids and they had their surgeries at Mott. They are all now doing great, and we can’t be happier with their care.” Hail, Lyra, Julian and Francis!

Children with congenital heart disease who undergo the complex Fontan surgery often need a heart transplant later — but they face some of the highest risks of complications and death after receiving a new heart.

Now, a new study led by the Mott congenital heart team reveals key risk factors behind these poor outcomes.

“We hope this research empowers cardiologists and other providers to take proactive steps that ultimately improve outcomes and ensure patients receive the right care at the right time." - Kurt Schumacher, M.D.

More on the new findings:

Study finds that the strongest risk factors for poor transplant outcomes in children with Fontan circulatory failure include low oxygen levels, hospitalizations and significant mental health challenges.

In a year that's already seen spikes in measles and whooping cough cases across Michigan, new research highlights another related trend: routine childhood and adolescent vaccination rates are declining statewide.

The sharpest drops were seen in counties with lower household incomes and higher uninsured populations.

“Our findings show that progress towards increasing childhood and adolescent immunizations is stalling in Michigan, increasing the risk of vaccine-preventable diseases,” said senior author and Mott Children's pediatrician Kao-Ping Chua, M.D., Ph.D.

Routine childhood and adolescent immunizations declined in Michigan, particularly among counties with lower household income and higher uninsurance rates, a new study suggests.
