Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative

Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative MBSC aims to advance the science and practice of bariatric surgery through continuous improvement Currently, 41 hospitals are participating in the project.

The Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative, or MBSC, is a regional, voluntary group of hospitals and surgeons that perform bariatric surgery in Michigan. The project is funded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM). The goal of the MBSC project is to improve the quality of care for patients undergoing bariatric surgery. To do this, the participating hospitals submit data to the MBSC r

egistry database. Three times a year, the group meets to examine this data and to design and make changes in patient care, which will produce better results for bariatric surgery patients.

The strength of collaboration was on full display at the 2026 ASMBS Annual Meeting.

Dr. Oliver Varban, Co-Director of the Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative and surgeon at Henry Ford Health, presented work examining the safety of SADI-S adoption using data collected from hospitals across the statewide MBSC collaborative.

By bringing together data, expertise, and shared quality improvement efforts from participating Michigan hospitals, MBSC continues to support innovation in bariatric and metabolic surgery while maintaining a strong focus on patient safety and outcomes. Proud to see this collaborative work highlighted on a national stage at ASMBS.
