Maakye from Ghana!

On the the final stop of Otana's global ophthalmology fellowship, she spent time at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra and at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi. Taking part in the decades long "MichiGhana" partnership, Otana was able to learn and teach within the specialty of pediatric ophthalmology. This stop provided an opportunity for Otana to make new friends and to reconnect with old friends! The importance of these global partnerships is the unique opportunities that only they can provide. While in Ghana, Otana learned how training and capacity building can dramatically change the landscape of healthcare.

Alethea “Thea” was born with a cataract in her left eye. Without surgery, she would have lost her vision in that eye. At 12 days old, she had cataract surgery. Since then, she has undergone numerous appointments and has followed all the advice her U-M doctor has given her.

Because of all her hard work, she has great vision and she recently graduated from preschool! Congrats, Thea!
