Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases which cause loss of sight by damaging the optic nerve.

It started out as a collection of unusual symptoms, including childhood glaucoma, skin rashes, arthritis and spontaneous tendon rupture. Soon, it became a collaborative effort between the Gibson family, doctors, researchers and the NIH to understand a rare type of genetic glaucoma.

A large group of researchers, led by University of Michigan and partnering with University of Missouri, have now received an NIH grant to better understand the disease, its interactions with viral infections, and to develop therapies.

Dysfunctional cell barriers can cause a range of diseases, including stroke, brain tumors and blinding eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy.

University of Michigan researchers have uncovered the role of occludin, a protein that regulates the tight connections between cells. They are now working on trying to restore these cell barriers in patients with diabetes, helping them with their vision.

Older adults with severe vision loss are three to four times more likely to fall when they live in homes with hazards such as missing grab bars, tripping risks or broken flooring.

A new study finds that it’s not just that poor vision increases fall risk or that hazards increase fall risk—it’s the interaction between the two that really matters.

Since 2016, Michael Budd’s vision progressively became worse, regardless of how many eyeglass prescription changes he went through. His vision was blurry and everything looked distorted, especially in the evenings.

He was diagnosed with Fuchs’ dystrophy, a condition where the corneal cells that are responsible for pumping out fluid gradually die off. After treatment at Kellogg with Dr. Mian, his vision has been completely restored.

Frances Valentine, co-founded by Elyce Arons, has teamed up with the Mary Tyler Moore Vision Initiative—led by Dr. S. Robert Levine, Mary’s husband—for a Fall 2026 capsule collection paying tribute to the legendary actress and advocate. Drawing inspiration from Mary Tyler Moore’s groundbreaking TV roles, the collection captures her bold sense of style, optimism, and effortless confidence that set trends throughout the 1960s and 1970s.

A portion of the proceeds supports the Vision Initiative’s mission to advance research in preventing and restoring vision loss from diabetes, honoring, and continuing the tireless advocacy championed by Mary Tyler Moore and carried forward by Dr. S. Robert Levine.

Kellogg Eye Center remains a key participant at the Vision Initiative symposium, where a community of experts and leaders unite to accelerate progress against vision loss caused by diabetes.
