Friday SAME DAY Openings:
Only one left for today! Matt at 7:30 for 60 minutes.
This photo holds so much of what this year meant to us.
2025 was a landmark year at Balance Massage Therapy.
17 years in business.
134,000 massages.
A thoughtful two-year transition plan announced.
And a book born from nearly two decades of learning and leading inside these walls — The SuperPower of Service — a true love letter to Balance and the people who make it what it is.
But what stands out most isn’t the milestones.
It’s you.
Because of this community, our Season of Giving once again became something truly special:
💙 A Humane Society kennel sponsored for a full year
🍽️ $1,635 raised for Food Gatherers — more than 6,500 meals for local families (plus physical food donations)
🎁 Support for two families through Secret Santa of Ypsi, including a laptop that felt especially meaningful
This is what happens when people show up with intention.
Generosity turns into comfort.
Care turns into dignity.
And service becomes something you can feel.
As we step into 2026, we’re deeply grateful to be part of your wellness journey - whatever the year ahead holds. One thing remains true:
At Balance, we’ve got your back.
Happy New Year, everyone. We’ll see you in the studio soon. 💙

October 11th, 2008 is always a special day for Chris and I. It's the first day we left our house, drove to Balance, and opened our doors for business.
The stories of finding each other and Balance are so special to us.
Chris and I met at transitional times in our lives. I had moved back to Michigan from Chicago after the sudden passing of my father. I helped my mom run our family story, "Hickory Market" for a year before she decided to close it. I wanted to stay close to my family and moved to Ann Arbor. I'd had this dream of opening a politically themed cafe so I decided to get a job working in coffee so I could learn the ropes. I started working at Caribou Coffee in March 2006.
Chris lost her brother to cancer during her sophomore year at UofM. She literally worked through the grief by staying enrolled at UofM Ann Arbor while working at the Flint GM plant. A couple of years after graduating GM offered a buyout option and Chris jumped at it. She always talks about "retiring" at the age of 24 and spending the summer sailing with her Dad. It's some of her favorite memories. With time to rest and heal, Chris decided to go back to school to get her Masters in Social Work. She thought it'd be fun to become a massage therapist to help her put herself through school. So in September of 2006 Chris started classes at the Ann Arbor Institute of Massage Therapy. It changed her life. She said she fell in love with everything about massage. She knew THIS was her calling and would be her life's work.
On September 15th of 2006 I was asked to interview a "GM retiree" for a position at Caribou and in walked Chris. It's funny how life is. We were two women with UofM degrees working part time at aminimum wage job, learning how to cope with our "new normals", and figure out the next phase of our lives. We had no idea on that day in September that in 2 years and 1 month's time we'd be engaged and opening our own business.
It was Chris' birthday in December of 2007 when she asked me, "Have you ever thought about owning a massage business?" I hadn't but I knew my love and passion for business combined with her expertise and love for massage would be a force in the Ann Arbor massage market. That question that seemed to come out of nowhere changed the course of our lives forever.
Opening a business in October 2008 was a scary thing to do. The economy was starting to tank and many of our friends and family wondered what we were doing. We knew that we could make it work. We believed in each other, in Ann Arbor, and in taking risks. I think both experiencing such a devastating loss at an early age made us realize that there are no guarantees in life. We didn't have anything holding us back.
We'd been through hell and came out of it with a renewed sense of purpose.
I love our story of finding each other. It's a sad one at a lot of levels because had we not experienced loss our roads wouldn't have lead us to each other. However, it's so full of joy and love. Finding each other helped us grow as people, strengthen as a couple, and create a business that let's us help people everyday. We know the healing power of massage and we are grateful every day that we can be a place of calm, hope, and healing in this world.
I wake up everyday thankful that I found my best friend, my business partner, and my wife. Finding each other is the best thing that has ever happened to usand finding Balance was the result of our love and belief in each other. It's a testament to fate, hard work, and passion.
Thank you for reading our story. We look forward to welcoming you into our BMT Community.
