When we think of the holiday season, food is as important as the gatherings with family and friends. Favorite family recipes, yummy treats, a special libation, and party platters to share are all part of the way we show love, caring, and remembrance.
And when you are on a health journey, this time can be a challenge! Loads of feelings are wrapped in these celebrations and it can be an emotional and mental rollercoaster. The question I’m asked by many clients this time of year is: how can I stay on my healthy path yet enjoy and participate in the celebrations?
Here are a couple tips I share with them:
Think 80/20. All or Nothing is sustainable in all things, especially during the holidays. It’s hard to be 100% during the holidays and I have found that thinking this way usually sets you up for getting really off track in your health plan. Think 80/20 instead. Keep 80% of your day/week making good choices and then your 20% to make a splurge. This still keeps your gut happy and your body nourished well.
Mind your Mind. We all have favorite foods and dishes when it comes to the holidays. If you decide to make that dish part of your splurge, eat it mindfully and ENJOY EVERY BITE with love and gratitude! You will digest it well. You won’t if you mentally punish yourself for it.
Eat before you go. Have a snack and some water before you head to an event. You will then have the energy and presence to make good choices. Think about it like going grocery shopping when you are hungry…more things are added to your cart because you can’t think straight.
Hit the Veggies first. Fill up on the greens and veggies first. This will feed your gut microbes and support your. Then see if you are still hungry and what you are hungry for.
Add in water. Being well hydrated keeps your gut and brain happy. Consider for every special beverage you take in, have one full glass of water after.
